The Grapevine (1/31/22): News On Shane McMahon's Royal Rumble Involvement and Major Heat, Backstage Morale Currently Low, Finn Balor Update

Shane McMahon in WWE Royal Rumble 2022

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Backstage news on Shane McMahon's Royal Rumble involvement and plans for WrestleMania

There is a lot of heat on Shane McMahon after Royal Rumble as he had helped produce the match as the lead writer and reportedly tried to book it in a way that would get himself over. He was reportedly "confrontational" and "fighting people" to make the men's Rumble match all about himself, which may have resulted in him being one of the final four wrestlers in the ring. Reports are claiming that even those who don't normally complain in the locker room are being loud right now.

There are reportedly plans for McMahon to wrestle at WrestleMania, although his opponent has not been finalized. He is also booked for Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia on February 25, so he will be more present in WWE programming in the foreseeable future. (Source: Ringside News, Dave Meltzer)

We say: While the Shane McMahon backstage dirt is incredibly spicy, it's tough to fully believe in it as it's Ringside News reporting. We'll take it with a grain of salt, but it's leaning toward being true as Shane did end up being one of the final four. He's popular, but we don't think he's that popular to try and outshine the current talent, meaning the locker room has a legitimate gripe if it's true that Shane tried to book the Royal Rumble around himself.

Backstage morale reportedly low after Royal Rumble

The morale in the WWE locker room is reportedly at another low following the Royal Rumble event. Vince McMahon had apparently made a lot of changes to the match on the day itself, which many people feel was the reason why the quality of the Royal Rumble matches was not what people expected. We say: That's not surprising at all, and we can imagine that the roster knew it was going to be a dud with the international audience. Still, being the professionals they are, they still did their best out there, and that's deserving of our respect.

Finn Balor is not in the US

Finn Balor missed the show as he is currently in Ireland. He last wrestled on the January 17th episode of RAW, and he seems to be on vacation. (Source: Twitter)

We say: Finn seems to be taking a lot of vacations lately, and not to say he doesn't deserve them after a long career, but a lot of fans did expect him to come out. Still, we can't fault a man for wanting (or needing) to get some rest, and the lukewarm men's Royal Rumble match didn't fully depend on his participation.
