NXT in the UK (9/26/21): Here's Looking At You, Kid

    A-Kid and Nathan Frazer

This week on NXT UK, we get a new #1 contender to the United Kingdom Championship, and I'm really glad that we're shaking up that title picture.

    A-Kid is the golden boy

NXT UK is, after all, still a developmental brand the same way NXT is. Meaning it's meant to lay a foundation for future top WWE stars, and with stateside NXT going back to this main focus in its refresh, it seems like NXT UK has also received this directive. Other than him being really, really good, that can explain why A-Kid has earned the right to be the new #1 contender to the NXT UK Championship.

First, the match—when you've got the young, budding Nathan Frazer and the big hoss Rampage Brown in there with someone as good as A-Kid, you know you're in for a solid triple threat. This main event caps off NXT UK's great September show-wise, and the action is amazing enough to solidify Brown and Frazer as other potential contenders. But for now, the spotlight is on A-Kid.

I've only found out upon doing a little background research for this review that A-Kid is only 24 years old, and he's already that phenomenal. It's clear that the brass sees something in him, or else he wouldn't have been the first NXT UK Heritage Cup Champion. A-Kid reminds me of a young and Spanish Finn Balor, with a ground-based technical and striking game that isn't afraid to fly high when he has to. Couple that with his solid English, boyish good looks, and confident demeanor, and you have the next big European WWE star in your hands. NXT does know how to pick 'em.

Of course, this isn't really to say that A-Kid is going to beat Ilja Dragunov for the UK Championship the next time they meet. It's just that him being next in line says a lot about how they view El Niño Anonimo, and if you haven't paid much attention to him yet, you're missing out. You'll have a good look at him in the eventual title match with Dragunov, and I'm personally hyped for that one.

    NXT UK 9/23/21 Grade: A

    Bits and pieces

    • I like that NXT UK has found a way to establish British Rounds matches that don't necessarily have to go a long six rounds just to be good. This semifinal match between Wolfgang and Teoman went only four after the former scored a fall in the first round. It's less exhausting that way, and makes bigger British Rounds matches more special when they're executed beautifully.
    • Charlie Dempsey aka Young Regal is debuting next week. This should be fun.
    • Are we seeing a bit of an edge from Xia Brookside? After a long time spent as a plain Jane goody-two-shoes babyface, it's a welcome change.
