NXT in the UK (8/19/21): The British SummerSlam Weekend Party

    Meiko Satomura and Stevie Turner

This week on NXT UK, the show enters SummerSlam weekend with two title matches!

It's SummerSlam weekend, and since NXT UK lost their big title match to America, they've made up for it with an NXT UK Women's Championship and an NXT UK Tag Team Championship match bookending the show.

Both matches are great. My only gripe, and I'm totally nitpicking here I'll admit, is that there wasn't really much of a buildup to Meiko Satomura vs. Stevie Turner. Stevie just talked shit to Meiko in the UK Performance Center a few weeks ago, and poof, she gets a title match. I get that Meiko is a fighting champion, but one would think that both people, especially the challenger whom we don't really know much of, deserve some proper hype like how Moustache Mountain gets.

That said, I'm enjoying Stevie Turner's work. She and Blair Davenport are bringing the Japanese style to the women's division, and since modern British wrestling is highly influenced by puroresu, it fits right in.

On to the other main event: Pretty Deadly retained the tag titles against a very game Moustache Mountain, and I'm generally happy with how Pretty Deadly are booked to wrestle good matches and still win using dirty tactics. I liked the towel fakeout which led to the belt shot, and it avoided the common trap of heels getting over because of good wrestling (something that happened quite a lot to teams like the Revival). I would've been open to a title change here, though.

I know there's a lot of wrestling to take in this week—especially with one big return—but if you still have time, this week's episode of NXT UK is a fine watch. But if not, it's okay to skip, too.

    NXT UK 8/19/21 Grade: A-

    Bits and pieces

    • I was not expecting that Saxon Huxley win over Eddie Dennis. I mean, I don't like Eddie Dennis all that much, but wow they're making use of people we don't see often.
    • Next week's episode is a must-watch for Joe Coffey vs. Rampage Brown. Here's to hoping whoever wins goes on to face a new NXT UK Champion.
