The Grapevine (5/19/21): The Miz Tears ACL, Angel Garza Note, WWE Shuts Down Talent Management Group

The Miz at WWE WrestleMania Backlash

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

The Miz suffers a torn ACL

The Miz tore his ACL during the lumberjack match at WrestleMania Backlash. He apparently tore it in the middle of the match yet still chose to finish it, earning praise from people backstage. It is not known yet how bad the tear is. This is his first major injury in his 15-year career. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio, Fightful Select)

We say: That is a really tough injury to have. Get well soon, Miz.

"Mixed signals" being sent out in Angel Garza's push

The WWE seems to be unsure about what they're doing with regard to Angel Garza's push, as the ThunderDome crowd is being asked to cheer for his actions while the face announcers are condemning it. It seems that Garza is still being pushed as a heel, and there may be a miscommunication on the audience coordination side. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)

We say: If that were the case, we certainly didn't really notice the crowd cheering or giving him the thumbs up. We'd say the commentators' reactions are on point.

WWE shuts down Talent Management Group

WWE has recently closed the Talent Management Group, the corporate department created to handle wrestlers' third-party partnerships. The division reportedly lasted only a little over a month, and was formed after the controversial policy stating that WWE Superstars could not have external sponsorships and be on platforms like Twitch and Cameo. This follows the recent rumors that Zelina Vega, who was fired last year after speaking out about these policies, is being rehired. (Source: PWInsider)

We say: While this was likely to happen thanks to Vince McMahon being scatterbrained on a lot of things lately, we can't tell if this is good news. Does this mean people are allowed to go back to third-party platforms, or does it mean that everything will be decided by McMahon or whoever runs marketing? This feels like a bigger mess than it should be.
