The Grapevine (12/14/20): WWE Big Men Need Further Training, Reigns/Rock To Be Moved, Lars Sullivan

Keith Lee and Matt Riddle on WWE RAW

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Main roster big men sent to Performance Center for additional training

The big news over the weekend was of WWE main roster big men Otis, Keith Lee, Mace, Dabba-Kato, and Omos being reportedly sent to the Performance Center for further training and refinement. Vince McMahon apparently "threw a fit" backstage about their work, and the additional training sessions will be conducted by WWE producer Adam Pearce and Drew Gulak. This news was supposed to be kept under wraps, but ended up leaking anyway.

With regard to Keith Lee, who is clearly well-experienced and talented, many believe that he was included in the group because of his size, with different reports that McMahon supposedly wants him to lose weight. Otis is believed to need some more work to be safer in the ring. Dabba-Kato had not been seen on RAW since the scrapping of RAW Underground, Mace had not had enough in-ring time after being removed from RAW commentary, and Omos is apparently nowhere near ring-ready, hence his role as a bodyguard for AJ Styles. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio, Fightful Select)

We say: It's understandable if you are baffled by this news, especially when it comes to Keith Lee. What should probably be made clear here is that in his (and to a degree, Otis's) case, it's not the officials saying they can't wrestle, but more likely that they don't work how they expect hosses to work. That's a different discussion of taste altogether.

In any case, there's nothing inherently wrong with continuing to train even after making it to the main roster. As Shane Helms deftly observed, professional athletes don't stop training at all despite already being on major-league teams. The big shock just comes from Vince not liking someone as talented as Keith Lee, and it actually implies that he doesn't seem to be watching NXT guys as closely as he should before calling them up. It's on them to do what they will with that information.

Roman Reigns vs. the Rock being moved from WrestleMania 37

Roman Reigns versus the Rock may not happen at WrestleMania next year due to a lack of fans. The event is in danger of being moved from Los Angeles to Tampa due to COVID-19 restrictions, and Vince McMahon wants to do the show in L.A. to capitalize off Rock's Hollywood prestige and mainstream media buzz, as well as also wanting fans in attendance. Rock has previously stated that he is open to wrestling his cousin Reigns at WrestleMania. (Source: WrestlingNews.co)

We say: That doesn't seem like a big issue, just that everyone, especially Roman, has to remain intact by WrestleMania 38.

    Lars Sullivan missing from SmackDown

Controversial big man Lars Sullivan has apparently not been seen backstage at SmackDown for a few weeks. It's been noted that people tend to hang out backstage even though they don't make the show, and Sullivan hasn't done that at all. His last appearance was on the November 6 episode. We say: Did they maybe tell him to lie low? We haven't heard any updates on his latest sexual harassment controversy, and keeping him out of the limelight may have worked on that end.
