Dark Side of The Elite (12/3/19): Jurassic Kick Party

There isn’t much to say about AEW Dark Episode 9, aside from the fact that it’s an okay hour of wrestling. Not every week is going to have Kenny Omega vs. Jack Evans, but we did have an entertaining main event with Santana and Ortiz taking on Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt of The Jurassic Express. Everything else was just alright though, and the Dynamite recaps made this show feel more like filler than usual.

Still, Dark did get to follow up on some stories from Dynamite with actual wrestling segments of its own. Luchasaurus and Jake Hager had a brief showdown after the two teased a program two weeks ago, so I’m looking forward to their eventual hoss match. Jimmy Havoc is a liability and proud of it, gladly paying the $10,000 fine so that he can use staple guns on his opponents like he did in the Dynamite Dozen Battle Royale, making him look more dangerous in the process.

We also got to see The Young Bucks have a brief Superkick Party, helping out Jurassic Express against The Inner Circle. I did not expect to see this story play out in Dark so that was definitely appreciated, though nothing major happened.

I would also like to point out how entertaining Nyla Rose was in the commentary booth. She told a couple of funny jokes and puns, making the Native Beast more interesting in the process. Shanna was actually supposed to commentate with Excalibur but Rose attacked her, teasing a feud between the two, which I can appreciate.

    Now, on with the matches.

    Jimmy Havoc def. Brandon Cutler

This was a solid match, though the result was never in doubt. While I do like Brandon Cutler, it’s clear that he’s here in AEW to put people over and that’s not a bad job to have. To be fair, he wasn’t completely dominated and got some offense in, so it wasn’t a basic squash either. In the end, Havoc won with the Acid Rainmaker and stapled a $10,000 check on Cutler’s head, which was pretty sick.

A backstage segment where Cutler and an agent confronted Havoc was shown. I dug this since Havoc said AEW should have known what they were getting themselves into when hiring him and he won’t stop hurting people with staple guns, even if he ends up broke. He also mentioned that bar fight he got into, supposedly with Excalibur, which was a fun way to incorporate that incident.

    Shawn Spears def. Sonny Kiss

Not much to write home about here. This match wasn’t too bad but was essentially a squash to make Spears look good, which is a shame since Kiss is talented and has yet to be given a chance to shine. I did like how Spears twerked, leading to a 10 chant from the smarky crowd. Aside from that, this match was pretty skippable.

Santana and Ortiz def. Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt

A very good match that showed us just how good the Proud and Powerful members of The Inner Circle are. However, Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt looked really good in defeat, almost beating Santana and Ortiz several times throughout the match.

Say what you will about Marko Stunt and his stupid, stupid, stupid dance but his tag team offense with Jungle Boy are some of the most fun spots in all of AEW. His childish looks and stature also made Santana and Ortiz’s moves look deadlier.

Final Grade: To be honest, if you want to get to the good stuff, the last 20 or so minutes of Dark is worth watching by themselves. The main event tag team match and the angle involving Luchasaurus, Jake Hager, and The Young Bucks that took place after are easily this show’s highlights. Unless you’re a big fan of the wrestlers involved in the first two matches, you’re not missing out skipping them. AEW Dark Episode 9 gets a C+.
