The Hourrr of Powerrr (11/5/19): Boom Boom Goes The Dynamite

If there's anything that pro wrestling in the modern age of monthly PPVs has drilled in us fans is that for every three or four weeks of TV, there's gotta be a big climax somewhere. It could either be a big event like the aforementioned pay-per-view, or a special episode with a really big match in a featured spot.

Powerrr has been overdue for the latter for a couple of weeks now, especially with their PPV still a ways away—this episode, it's the NWA National Championship match Colt Cabana earned against James Storm after Team Aldis beat Team Storm in last week's main event.

Spoiler alert: Boom Boom manages to win the championship from Storm, but not without revealing a couple of interesting motives along the way.

First, the pot-stirrer extraordinaire Eli Drake finally uncovers his chaotic ways—he may not be fully on James Storm's side, but he's definitely not friends with Cabana and Ken Anderson. While it's not entirely clear what his endgame is, what we do know is that he's not as benevolent as he appeared to guys like Tim Storm.

Speaking of not being as benevolent, Kamille's sudden presence in helping out Cabana may have less to do with Nick Aldis being a good guy and more to do with him not wanting James Storm to be his next challenger. Whether that means Aldis is a heel champion who actually doesn't want to get his hands dirty or just a really, really smart and conniving babyface, it's not 100% clarified just yet, but I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

That's because Powerrr's been doing a good job of slowly ramping up the stakes for each episode the further it goes. My only concern is it feels like the show right now is working within the context of a season, much like, say, Lucha Underground, more than your usual forever-running shows like WWE and AEW. If that's the case, when does it curve out? Does it all top out at their PPV? Will it be under a season format? These are things I think about, mostly because I'd like to know what to expect.

In any case, we've got a new National Champion, which likely solidifies the Cowboy as Aldis's next challenger further, no matter how much he tries to get away from him. I'm looking forward to that much more than I was for the other Storm challenging.

NWA Powerrr 11/5/19 Grade: A solid National Championship match (which strangely isn't the main event) anchors this week's episode. It's your typical fare; enjoyable enough but not too much to write home about. B+

    The Power Train

    • How old is Dave Marquez and why does he sound like he's been imported straight from the '60s? Not that that's a knock on him, I'm actually impressed he sounds so... professional. Like a tito broadcaster.
    • I find it extremely weird that the National Championship match wasn't the show's main event, even though it makes sense as the Dawsons competed in the first match.
    • Thunder Rosa is apparently the only wrestler on Powerrr to have some sort of theme music. Where does it all come from, Cornette???
    • Aldis continues to shape himself as someone who's just as conniving as Eli Drake when it comes to Tim Storm. Don't trust any of these guys, Tim.
    • Is this truly the best way to use Aron Stevens? Granted, he may have found himself the right niche in putting younger talent over, but I'm not quite interested in watching Ricky Starks take a cakewalk all over him.
    • Outlaw Inc. finally scores the win over those dastardly Dawsons, but how many other regular tag teams are there in NWA's tag team division?
