Dark Side of The Elite (11/26/19): Omega Campeón

If AEW announcing Kenny Omega vs. Jack Evans for the AAA Mega Championship in advance wasn’t enough to convince you that AEW Dark is worth watching this week, you’re a lost cause. AEW Dark Episode 8 is a stellar hour of wrestling, with three great matches so good that they should have been on Dynamite.

Well, I say these matches should be on Dynamite, but it's clear that the company knows how valuable Dark is to their overall brand. Giving time to the talent who don't always appear on the main show is commendable, and the “wins and losses matter” mantra of the company helps elevate Dark to a level above Superstars and Main Event.

Fans can also appreciate how Dark gives certain wrestlers the chance to commentate with Excalibur, letting them flesh their characters out. Dustin Rhodes was good to listen to last week and Shawn Spears was pretty fun in this episode, even if it didn’t completely mesh with the ruthless character AEW has been building him up to be, though references to Tully Blanchard and Joey Janela were nice.

Admittedly, there were some issues on the production side. Replays would fail to appear but their audio stayed, which was distracting since the commentators reacted to them as if they were being played to us. Wrestler’s nameplates also didn’t appear during entrances so we didn’t get to see their win/loss record. It’s not a good look for the second-biggest wrestling company in North America and here’s hoping they fix those glitches later on.

Even with all of that, you get to see Kenny Omega wrestle Jack Evans in this episode. For free. Watch this episode already, geez.

    Trent def. Pentagon Jr

The Best Friends continue to make AEW Dark their territory, as Trent managed to beat Pentagon Jr clean in an awesome little bout that wouldn’t have felt out of place in a pay-per-view. Considering how AEW has been pushing The Lucha Brothers, with Rey Fenix pinning Nick Jackson in last week’s Dynamite, this was a huge upset.

For most of the match, it seemed like Pentagon Jr winning was a surefire thing. He dominated Chuck Taylor’s BFF for a good portion of the match, even hitting a Package Piledriver on the ring apron. A. PACKAGE. PILEDRIVER. ON. THE. APRON.

This was the first match of the show.

Just when it seemed like The Lucha Brother was going to put Trent away with another Package Piledriver, Trent hit a desperation Dudebuster and managed to score the upset victory. As a fan of Trent, this was a nice surprise and I hope this means big things for him in the future.

    Shanna def. Big Swole

Another nice surprise and proof that AEW actually has a solid women’s division; they just need to be showcased more.

Prior to the match, we actually got a nice video package for Shanna, detailing her early struggles in the wrestling business and how she almost quit after an incident with an Impact Wrestling official. Big Swole cut a solid heel promo not long after, claiming that everyone has a story and fought to be in AEW, detailing her battles with Crohn’s Disease and death itself, before explaining why she calls herself Big Swole; because everything she does is grand.

Both of these segments were fantastic and we need to see more of it on the women’s side of AEW. Hell, I’d argue some of the lower-card men could benefit from being highlighted like this.

While I wouldn’t call this match grand, it was pretty darn good, minus a few sloppy moments. The technical wrestling early on was fantastic and the two worked well together, though some of the striking looked weak. These two are ready for the big time in Dynamite and I hope we see them used more from here on out. If someone like Britt Baker can wrestle regularly on national TV, I don’t see why these two can’t.

    Awesome Kong def. Leva Bates

Two women’s matches from AEW? Now that’s a shocking development!

Granted, this was a basic squash match but it did continue this oddball story of Brandi Rhodes being a hot voodoo witch with a monster by her side. The whole cutting women’s hair bit is mildly intriguing and I hope to see Kong in an actual match soon. Anyone who has seen her wrestle in TNA knows that the GLOW star can go in the ring.

Kenny Omega def. Jack Evans to Retain the AAA Mega Championship

If you decided to check out this week’s episode of AEW Dark, chances are it was for this match. It’s always an event when Kenny Omega steps into the ring and Jack Evans is one of the best high-flyers in the business. Needless to say, this match did not disappoint.

Straying away from a formula that WWE has conditioned in many of us, we actually had a high-flying heel in this match and it worked really well. Jack Evans from the Heavens (thanks Excalibur) is a show-off who knows how damn athletic he is, doing flips for no reason and literally break dancing to avoid damage from one of Kenny’s attacks. His high-flying maneuvers actually add to his heel character and seeing him constantly badmouth Kenny was great.

The commentators tried to build up how Omega has been affected by his rivalry with Jon Moxley, which was a bit of a stretch. Still, the Omega Champion of AAA did show how ruthless he can be, hitting Evans with a number of Backbreakers, multiple Dragon Suplexes, and his beautiful One-Winged Angel for the win.

Both stars looked great and I wish we got to see more of Jack Evans on Dynamite. The guy is just way too talented and I’m glad he has a show like Dark that can showcase his talents but I wouldn’t complain if he and Angelico took on Private Party or The Best Friends tomorrow. Just saying.

Final Grade: AEW Dark Episode 8 gets an A for Amazing. Watch for Kenny Omega and Jack Evans but stay for everything else.
