Smark Hen-XT (10/30/19): Who Said War Was Good For Absolutely Nothing?

This week's focus was on the forthcoming NXT TakeOver: WarGames pay-per-view. As I've said over the past few weeks, October to November is WarGames season and it looks like the show is finally taking shape as of this episode.

First things first, Let's talk about the upcoming women's WarGames match, which is a first in history. This was a match that stemmed from rivalries between the NXT's women's division's major stars. Instead of tiptoeing between its top stars on who will get to challenge for the championship, we'll be getting a mix of the division's finest.

While the participants haven't officially been announced, it'll most likely involve Shayna Baszler, Io Shirai, Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai, Tegan Nox, Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, Marina Shafir, and Jessamyn Duke—okay, Shafir and Duke aren't the division's finest, but you get the point. Notice that there are nine names mentioned, so there will most likely be one removed or one more added to one of the teams to balance it out. We'll have to wait for further announcements.

The next important matter is what looks to be a second WarGames match. At the end of the show, it was teased that The Undisputed ERA would be going toe-to-toe with the team of Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, and Matt Riddle. However, since the ERA is a four-man group, it might be safe to assume that Ciampa's team might add a fourth man.

While Dominik Dijakovic was teased earlier as Lee's partner, it might be better to assume that the fourth spot will go to the missing Velveteen Dream. Dream has been out for a couple of weeks after the ERA brutalized him and sure enough, he'll most likely make an appearance and a comeback to announce his support for those who stand against the ERA.

In other news, Finn Bálor came out to give a slightly cryptic but completely heelish promo to give Johnny Gargano his notice; we'll probably get a match between the two for the PPV. The promo itself wasn't that memorable but he did reference his defeat against The Fiend/Bray Wyatt.

For the night's matches, Bronson Reed defeated Shane Thorne in a match which will possibly put Thorne lower on the cards again. Cameron Grimes beat Tyler Bate in a match that included a Killian Dain appearance (I'm not sure what Dain's deal is right now). Io Shirai got the win over Candice LeRae as the Kabuki Warriors also won over Team Kick (Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai) which led to the events mentioned at the start of this article. Lastly, the Undisputed ERA (Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish) was victorious against the makeshift team of Keith Lee and Matt Riddle.

The matches themselves weren't really special but the events which transpired after each match is worth watching. Last week's episode was better in every way, but this week was a steady developmental week wherein stories progressed and preparations for NXT TakeOver: WarGames was laid out.

    Grade: B-

Match To Watch: Tegan Nox & Dakota Kai vs. The Kabuki Warriors (c) (Asuka & Kairi Sane) for the Women's Tag Team Championships

    Not-So-Full Sails

    • Poppy. 'Nuff said.
    • So you mean to say, we made Cameron Grimes lose his winning streak last week, only to let him win against Tyler Bate this week? Why couldn't this have been done last week instead so that Grimes' streak was extended? Bate is a former NXT UK Champion so the win would've helped his stock.
    • I didn't totally like Pirate Kairi Sane, but now I'm totally in love with scary Kairi.
    • It's nice to finally see the Women's Tag Team Championship cross over to NXT as promised. Although, I do wish they did this on NXT UK as well to help cross-promote the brand.
    • Speaking of NXT UK, whatever happened to Imperium? I haven't seen them on this brand for a while. They'd fit in a WarGames set-up.
    • As I've said earlier, I don't know what Dain's deal is, but he seems to be picking random fights with NXT UK stars. Could this be the brand's participation for NXT TakeOver: WarGames?
