SmackDown RunDown Live (9/10/19): All Hail, King Gable!

So Chad Gable is going to the King of the Ring Finals. Gable fanboying in 3, 2, 1…

I told y’all! I told y’all MFers that Chad Gable’s going to the finals! Y’all laughed at me, scoffed at me, called me stupid, stupid, stupid—no one really did, just go with it—and yet here we are talking about him like he’s the real deal. And he is the real deal.

Y’all think Baron Corbin’s gonna win this thing? Y’all be trippin’. That bald waiter-looking mfer don’t stand a chance against Kurt Angle’s spiritual successor. I’m telling y’all, he’s going to win it all. Mark my words!

Now that we got all the y’alls out of the way, let’s really talk about this week’s main event. While RAW had an awesome triple threat match for their semis, SmackDown Live had Shane McMahon. Yey? I guess we can at least commend them for putting the KOTR at the end and letting Chad Gable main event, at Madison Square Garden no less. That’s how you make a star. I’m really glad the KOTR is fulfilling its purpose: to launch relative unknowns to stardom.

But did we really have to drag Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens into this? I mean, they had to. After all, Elias is Shane’s lapdog so Shane and Owens would be involved somehow. But why can’t we have Drew McIntyre, the other lapdog, deliver a great semi-final and match the intensity from the RAW side? They can tell a story and deliver a five-star match at the same time if they really put their heads into it. Could’ve made Gable’s victory even sweeter.

And since when did the Shane/Owens rivalry turn into a modern-day Big Show storyline? I’m pretty sure someone like Kevin Owens can afford to pay a $100,000 fine. Batista, John Cena, and other babyfaces before Owens paid fines without incident. And now Owens is “fired.” Right. I know wrestling is one big cliché, but these fining and firing angles are some of the clichés I hate seeing. Aren’t we supposed to settle issues in the middle of the ring?

Aside from my boy Chad Gable inching closer to the crown, the other bright spot of the week involved a little bit of poetic justice. If I knew the KOTR semi finals would be a dud, I would’ve picked the WWE Championship segment to close the show. I bet if this was given more time and if we didn’t have the nonsensical Roman Reigns vs. Rowan brawl earlier, we could’ve seen more carnage and destruction from two competitors with a rivalry worth tuning in for.

But hey, what we got was great, too. I’m really glad they went through with the recreation spot rather than flip the script and have Randy Orton come up on top ‘cause they’re edgy like that. Does this mean Kofi Kingston will lose the title at Clash of Champions? Not necessarily. Orton dominated the entire build-up, thanks to his dangerous alliance with The Revival. This was the first time Kingston got the upper hand. They’re just balancing things out, as they should.

SMACKDOWN RUNDOWN: It’s ironic how the special MSG episode of SmackDown Live failed to keep the ball rolling with the back-to-back tight shows they’ve had the past few weeks. The pacing was off, the action was repetitive, and the main event stunk. Aside from a few bright spots here and there, this week’s show was yet another skippable cog in the machine. Keep the wheel spinning, everyone. Nothing to see here.

    • Hey, The Undertaker was here, too. He was just there. And at some point, I think I saw Sami Zayn with him. Can’t remember things right.
    • The only fun part about the Roman Reigns and Rowan brawl was Rowan throwing a “fan” down. Can we have that in every brawl from now on? Thanks.
    • The less we talk about Mandy Rose’s ridiculously awful promo, the better. It’s not like she wrote it or anything. Hire more female writers, WWE.
    • I now realize that the Bayley-to-Belly finisher isn’t really a great way to end a squash match.
    • I know MSG is supposed to be a special arena in WWE, but I will always know it as the arena where the TitanTron is located in front of the hard camera. WrestleMania XX was a great PPV.
