Smark Hen-XT (8/7/19): A Prelude to TakeOver: Toronto

I know I've mentioned several times before how post-TakeOver episodes are normally invaluable ones meant to help get the top stars some rest after a successful show. However, I don't believe I've said how most pre-TakeOver episodes are total fillers which book a couple of non-TakeOver related matches while playing promos and vignettes hyping the actual feuds that will play on the PPV.

The same can be said about this one. We got two (well, more like one) matches which don't really factor in for this weekend's big event. Yes, Joaquin Wilde versus Shane Thorne was a good match even if it had minimal heat on it. Matt Riddle versus Killian Dain didn't even happen. I know they're probably trying to prolong the feud but it felt like a waste of air time. I wish we got another match instead.

The only segment that actually ties into the upcoming PPV would be the opener. The contract signing between The Street Profits and The Undisputed ERA was okay. It wasn't anything new but it did add a little heat to their eventual faceoff. I'm still on the fence on who I want to win for this one. On one hand, I'd love the ERA to capture all of the NXT gold, however, I'd also still love to see the Profits stay on NXT with a legitimate title reign.

That being said, in line with this week being uneventful, we're going to breeze right through the predictions for NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

    Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae

Io Shirai. She needs to win to give her new character some momentum. Candice can win the rest of the matches if they continue the feud but for this first one, Io has to seriously win. Plus, wouldn't you want to see Shirai win and see how she celebrates this victory now that she has a new demeanor?

Triple Threat Match for the NXT North American Championship: Pete Dunne vs. Roderick Strong vs. Velveteen Dream (c)

Roderick Strong. While the unexpected arrival of Pete Dunne may have added an unnecessary bump to Strong's road to the NXT North American Championship, this could actually work his way. Roddy could probably pick off the leftovers once Dunne and Dream have finished outdoing each other.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: The Undisputed Era (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) (c)

The Undisputed ERA. I hope you're ready for a three-time reign. The Profits are slowly integrating themselves into Monday night programming so all signs point to the ERA. To be honest, I'm not really down with having the Profits lose but I have to pick the most likely result.

NXT Women’s Championship Match: Mia Yim vs. Shayna Baszler (c)

Shayna Baszler. Mia's not getting this one. If there's somebody who I think should dethrone Shayna in the future, I believe it's going to be Candice LeRae. Mia will give Shayna a hard time, but she's not winning this one. Sorry.

2 out of 3 Falls Match for the NXT Championship: Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole (c)

Adam Cole. Okay. Maybe I'm picking Cole just because I'm a fan. Maybe it's because I want the Undisputed ERA to actually fulfill the destiny they spoke of.

The fact of the matter is, these two have faced each other more times in the last few months than most wrestlers so they have to move forward with other people now. Cole seems likelier to win so it can set up more possible storylines. NXT has too many babyfaces and him retaining could help catapult the next big star to the main event.

    Not-So-Full Sails

    • With rumors of NXT possibly moving to two hours, this would mean they'll need more talents. With a limited selection of tag teams, keeping the Street Profits on NXT would be beneficial. As it stands, the main roster has too much talent already.
    • I'm not too keen on the Joaquin Wilde entrance attire. It just feels so tacky and cartoonish to me. I still enjoy watching the guy though.
    • I like the short Japanese dialogue from Shirai during the hype video for her feud with Candice LeRae. I've always thought the native language card was an effective tool for being a heel.
    • This is what Matt Riddle has become. I'm starting to think his comments against Goldberg, Booker T, and maybe Chris Jericho (to an extent) did not go unnoticed by management.
Did you agree with our picks? What do you think of Matt Riddle's current standing in the card? Sound off in the comments section below.
