    #FinisherFriday (8/30/19): Wasteland

Welcome to another edition of #FinisherFriday! In this week's article we will take a look at a finisher that has had its fair share of negative criticism.

A WWE fan who has religiously watched the product for the last decade can begrudgingly agree that Wade Barrett had a fruitful wrestling career. From being the overall winner of the first season of NXT, to forming and leading two stables, to winning the Intercontinental Championship five times, to being the last winner of the King of the Ring Tournament, all who dared to go against him were met with bad news.

Taking pride of himself as a "bareknuckle fighter," Barrett's arsenal doesn't have much eye candy, opting for maximum damage instead. Some of his notable moves include:

Pumphandle falling powerslam (Road Dogg's finisher without the humping)

Winds of Change (which closely rivals Abyss' Black Hole Slam)

    His finisher, the Bullhammer

However, one move of his that gathered a lot of negative feedback online was his previous finisher, Wasteland. It even got a mention at The Whole F'n Show podcast, which took the negativity a notch higher:

Well, I get what they are saying, but in reality, the move is really great and efficient. Let's make a step-by-step breakdown of the move first before jumping to the analysis:

    1. Barrett starts with placing the opponent atop his shoulders in the basic fireman's carry position
    2. He grabs the opponent's left wrist or forearm using his right hand
    3. He grabs the opponent's left knee using his left hand and forearm
    4. In one quick whipping motion, he flings the opponent's body downwards in front of him

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the move; I can even confidently say that there's more to it than meets the eye. Here's why:

When you take your focus away from the back bump, you will soon realize that the Wasteland is actually THREE maneuvers in one! Do you know what the other two maneuvers are? I'll give you some time to think...

If you haven't figured it out, the two moves are:

    1. Arm drag

    2. Dragon screw leg whip

Since Barrett releases the opponent's left wrist and knee just before they hit the canvas (mostly just below his hip level), both the shoulder and hip joint are subjected to intense trauma on a very small margin of rotation, which may cause ruptured muscles, ligaments, and tendons surrounding the said joints.

Also, since the opponent is in the fireman's carry position, they cannot make any adjustments when their entire body starts falling down beyond the rotation limits of their shoulder and hip joints, which greatly maximizes the efficiency of the move.

Imagine having one side of your body incapacitated; all Barrett has to do after he executes the move is to (easily) control the right side of your body so you cannot break the pin. For me, the back bump is just a minor thought compared to these two ungodly moves, all contained in one greatly misunderstood finisher.

Using my trusty Regal Rating, I'd give it a:

7/10 for aesthetics. It's definitely good to watch when he does it on smaller opponents since it's almost like he's ragdolling them, but on larger opponents, it just seems like he's dropping them down because his lower back is killing him.

10/10 for damage and practicality. The fireman's carry is easy to set up, and doing three moves in one quick motion definitely gives a lot of bang for your buck.

And that's it chaps, Wade Barrett's Wasteland deconstructed! Do you want the Bearer of Bad News to have one more run in the WWE? Let us know in the comment section below!
