Smark Hen-XT (6/19/19): The Start of A New ERA In NXT

It may truly be a new era in NXT now with the way this week's show played out. It's amazing how Tommaso Ciampa's unexpected injury may have changed booking plans and eventually led to Johnny Gargano's and Adam Cole's NXT Championship runs.

Looking back to a few months ago, Roderick Strong and Adam Cole were slowly heading into break-up territory before Ciampa's injury indirectly put Cole in the main event spot for a championship match to crown the new NXT Champion. Fast forward to today and we've got the Undisputed ERA riding high with Cole as the champ and Roddy as a very credible and integral part of the ERA.

The ERA's antics, especially for this episode, were funny and entertainingprops to that edited version of the NXT intro consisting of just their highlights. In a way, they may be right and their contributions as performers on the brand may be unparalleled. The Undisputed ERA truly is the hottest thing going on in NXT right now and Adam Cole and his crew know how to keep the fans in the palm of their hands.

Their promo would lead to the appearance from Matt Riddle, Velveteen Dream, and Tyler Breeze which is probably a team-up I never thought I'd see. I still feel Riddle is weird on the mic, however, Dream's presence brought the mood up and Breeze's interactions proved that he still has a solid following in the NXT Universe. The three men exchanged threats with the ERA and challenged them in what was a highly engaging main event bout that saw Roddy get the win for the team via the End of Heartache.

I love the fact that Roddy is getting more love recently. It might be high time to see him holding the NXT North American Championship. Likewise, an eventual tag team reign for Bobby Fish and Kyle O' Reilly would be welcome in my books as well. Hell, just give these boys what they want and get them all the gold so that they can fulfill their prophecy.

The other important announcement which signifies the start of this new era was the fact that starting next week, a tournament involving the Performance Center's upstarts will take place. The winner will get a title shot of his choosing.

Truth be told, the up-and-comers aren't really rookies per se, rather, a majority of indie darlings who haven't been part of WWE's system to date so expect that the matches to be of high quality. I hope it's something along the lines of the Cruiserweight Classic wherein a lot of names were very impressive.

For the second week in a row, I enjoyed the show. This may be due to the fact that they put the focus on names that I know add value to the brand. Also, the tournament gives us a lot to look forward to in terms of new Superstars to follow.

    Grade: A

    Not-So-Full Sails:

    • The new Undisputed ERA shirt reminds me of Pikachu and Philippine Wrestling Revolution's Jake De Leon.
    • Velveteen Dream channeled his inner Goldust with the line "I'd like to touch you." Dream's sexual ambiguity grows more and more with each promo.
    • It might not be as good a parallel, but the Damien Priest (formerly Punishment Martinez) character gave me Aleister Black rip-off vibes.
    • Who's excited for the Breakout Tournament involving eight top NXT up-and-comers? My money is on Joaquin Wilde but only because of Pinoy Pride.
    • I enjoyed the Street Profits vignette because of how well they interacted with the crowd. They just might be the most over tag team in NXT next to The Undisputed ERA.
Who are you looking forward to seeing in the Breakout Tournament? Do you like The Undisputed ERA's renewed push? What's your take on Damien Priest's repackaging? Hit us up in the comments section below.
