SmackDown RunDown Live (5/21/19): It Should’ve Been Ziggy

    Man, being Dolph Ziggler sucks.

If you think about it, both Zigman and Kofi Kingston started gaining steam around the same time. They’ve had great matches together, usually for the midcard titles, but neither one of them got that brass ring through their rise. Well, Ziggler did win the World Heavyweight Championship at least twice. But honestly, who even remember those?

Eleven years later, Ziggler and Kingston crossed paths once again. This time, the tides have turned. Kingston is now sitting at the top of the food chain, the place where Ziggler should've been all this time. As he said in the most dramatic way he can, "It should've been me." Someone's been taking acting classes.

It’s not really fair to compare the two, you might think. I did remind you of Dolph Ziggler’s world title wins. But somehow, those reigns couldn’t compare to what Kofi Kingston achieved at WrestleMania 35. So we can conclude that it doesn’t matter who wins a world title. What matters is whether people will care or not. And people caring about your world title reign is something Ziggler never got. Sure, he received the loudest pop when he cashed in his MITB briefcase to capture his second world title in 2013. But did he get ZigglerMania? Did he get a WrestleMania moment for the ages? All he got was that one night on RAW when everyone cared about him existing.

Why am I talking about Dolph Ziggler? Aside from the fact that he returned and gave Kofi Kingston a good beating, it's just sad that he made another lackluster return. How many Ziggler returns have we gotten already? We all know how those returns ended up for our old pal Ziggy. And this time, it's no different. He's just a replacement for Kevin Owens for the next Saudi show because KO somehow earned enough clout to refuse Vinnie Mac's orders to go to Saudi. It's just sad that Ziggler will definitely lose at Saudi Super Showdown because duh, why would Kofi lose his title at a show already despised by most of the fanbase?

It's just sad that Ziggler will probably never win a world title ever again, even when we all know he deserves it. So welcome back, Ziggler, and goodbye. Enjoy your next hiatus after this.

    The Wild Card RunDown

Alright, alright. Let’s talk about that goddamn belt.

I can say this with full confidence: the 24/7 Championship is the shittiest title in WWE right now. From the way the belt was designed to the name of the title itself, everything about it sucks. Even the Hardcore Championship, it’s spiritual predecessor, looks better than whatever the fuck the 24/7 Title is. I get that it’s supposed to be a silly title and all, but does it really have to look so shitty? Can they at least exert a little effort in designing a belt worth chasing after? And where’s the subtlety? Why not call it the Jobber Championship if they really want to be literal about it?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not being a party pooper here. I did enjoy R-Truth’s shenanigans this week on SmackDown Live. But if they really want this title to be the new talk of the town, why does it have to be ugly? I really can’t see the incentive for these jobbers and lower midcarders to chase an ugly belt other than it’s a title—a title is a title. And the fact that they had to show Sami Zayn judging these pathetic fools pretty much tells you how we should treat the title: as a joke. At least the Hardcore Champion had prestige. You really think Roman Reigns will ever win this title?

It’s all fun and games until your favorite Superstar gets relegated to the 24/7 Title scene and then you’ll bitch about him not being treated properly. But hey, I’m glad you're enjoying the wacky 24/7 rules, right?

SMACKDOWN RUNDOWN: Minus the eye-rolling main event and the continuing absurdity that is the Wild Card Rule, this week's episode was pretty solid, a far cry from last week's atrocity. We've got new champions and challengers running around—quite literally for the 24/7 Championship scene—and I'm all for it. Hopefully, this week's show is proof that not everything in WWE is as bad as we think it is. But who am I kidding? It’s not like things will get better next week. I'ma give them a good B- for their efforts.

    The RunDown CutDown

    • It's rare that I get to predict a match down to the finish, so I'm glad to see my vision come true. Bayley is the new SmackDown Women's Champion! And just like that, Bayley is cool again. That's how you redeem someone. Now let's do this again in the future, this time for heel Asuka.
    • That Andrade vs. Ali match didn't need to be that physical, but I'm glad it was. Ali looked great outsmarting the heel and Andrade also looked great as a dominant heel who got caught off-guard. Also, Ali won again with this tweet.

    • I'm just glad we saw Twitter Big E in action this week. He's still salivating over #TheMa, apparently. You do you, big guy. Continue doing you.
    • So Sami Zayn is like the most OP (out of place) wrestler right now. He miraculously survived a garbage truck beatdown and a surprise attack from someone (possibly Bray Wyatt). Both times, he sprang up the next day good as new, with a little bit of selling here and there for good measure. I'm not sure how to feel about this.
    • Please have Elias play the guitar at random places while stalking random Superstars every week. Similar to his old gimmick, but a bit weirder.
    • The real victims of the 24/7 Championship are the referees who have to pound concrete to count the pinfall attempts backstage. Press “ref” to pay respects.
