SmackDown RunDown Live (3/5/19): Damn You, John Cena!!!

Like many fans, I was also part of Team Becky/Ronda because I’m a fan of good ol’ fashioned one-on-one WrestleMania main events. Granted, the last one sucked balls and the one before that sucked way worse, but I digress. I want a main event that literally every wrestling fan clamored for, not a corporate-mandated narrative. But by the looks of it, we'll have to settle for Becky/Ronda/Charlotte. If you ask me, that’s a heck of a compromise.

And after this week’s main event segment, I’m convinced that making it a triple threat was the right call, if only to keep the storyline progression fresh and interesting. Remember, Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey will have to cover three months' worth of storylines. They can’t just engage each other in a Twitter war for three months (although that doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me) and they can’t just beat each other up week after week. So yes, send in Charlotte Flair.

All that hullabaloo brought us to this week’s SmackDown Live, with Becky Lynch sending her Fastlane opponent a strong message about damaged people being the most dangerous. It was a great segment and I really have nothing more to say. What bugs me is that WWE missed their opportunity to give the fans what they originally wanted in the first place with the stipulations they set for the Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair match at Fastlane.

Both women should be fighting for the sole contendership at WrestleMania. Flair already served her purpose by keeping the storyline compelling over the last two months and Ronda Rousey finally turned heel so that’s good too. We can totally get rid of Charlotte Flair at Fastlane without making her whole contribution to the angle feel contrived. C’mon, people, am I the only one seeing the pieces fall into their right places? Let’s get us the one-on-one main event we deserve!

Obviosuly, I'm just spitballing here. I'm aware that Charlotte Flair is Vince McMahon's handpicked contender and as proven by the prevous episodes, his word will always be final. But man, wouldn't it be m
ore exciting to put Charlotte Flair’s 'Mania spot on the line at Fastlane? We all know Becky Lynch and Charlotte work better when both of their backs are against the wall. But like I said earlier, Becky/Ronda/Charlotte is a great compromise so I'm settling with that. The rest of Team Becky/Ronda should, too.

In other news, Samoa Joe just won his first title on the main roster—the United States Championship. Meh. This title is beneath him, to be honest. Someone of his caliber should be winning the WWE Championship on his first day. But a title is a title and I guess it’s good for Joe’s stock. His backstage interview after winning the title was also superb, so I’m still glad he finally got something to do in time for WrestleMania. Also, he's finally using his own version of the Urunage which is kickass.

I’m just disappointed they had to cut R-Truth’s entertaining reign short. He was doing good with the open challenge gimmick and the channeling of John Cena’s virtues that it made me think that he’ll be defending his title against his “idol” in another clueless open challenge at WrestleMania. That would’ve been great. But at least the way he lost it wasn’t lackluster. What an action-packed fatal four-way we got there. At this point, I’m not even that mad. I just wish this won’t be the end of R-Truth being on TV. We still need them dance breaks.

SMACKDOWN RUNDOWN: You’d be forgiven if you forgot that this week’s show would send us off to Fastlane on Monday (Manila Time). I couldn’t care less about this PPV. Let’s get to WrestleMania already! But fine, I guess the card for Fastlane looks good, too. And SmackDown Live did a great job setting every major storyline up, not just for the upcoming PPV, but for Mania as well. We even got a new champion out of the deal. That’s nice. I probably should change my rating system since I always give out A’s. I’ll think of something.

    The RunDown Cutting Board

    • Kevin Owens as a babyface? Eh, I still don’t buy it. It’s refreshing, for sure, but I’m still not on board with his pandering-to-the-people schtick. And Mustafa Ali’s back? So are we getting a four-way at WrestleMania? Seriously, what’s wrong with having a one-on-one main event?

    • The Usos killed it again on the mic this week and I just love it. That’s really all I can say. The Uso street code promo they cut last year still lingers in my mind as one of the best written and delivered promos ever. I love them, that’s all. Move along while I rewatch their greatest hits.
    • Also, there’s Asuka beating the living shit out of her challenger, as the wrestling gods intended it to be.
    • I know I’ve said SmackDown Live’s tag team division is the best right now, but damn are they stacked. RAW only has like two credible tag teams (and one of them is the team made up of unsigned NXT dudes) while SmackDown Live hoarded all the great teams in WWE. I think it’s time to share some blessings to our Red Brand counterparts. Maybe give them Shinsuke Nakamura and Rusev or something.
