Live From the 205 (3/12/19): Semis Szn

This tournament just got really interesting.

After a night of solid wrestling, your two finalists set for next week are Tony Nese and Cedric Alexander. I've pretty much predicted Cedric getting all the way to the finals after beating Akira Tozawa last week, but Nese joining him there adds in a possible wrinkle that at least makes next week's main event must-see.

It's entirely possible that Cedric wins it all and goes back to WrestleMania to redeem his lost championship. That's still on the table after tonight, when he beat Oney Lorcan in a thrilling contest. But they also went and got the other guy who could conceivably take Buddy Murphy on in a friend versus friend match.

Had Drew Gulak beaten Tony Nese (which I was bracing myself for) this week, the Cedric versus Murphy match at WrestleMania would've been locked in. There wouldn't have been any point for a heel Gulak to go up against a heel Murphy. There's only slightly more in it for a still-heel Nese to go up against his training partner (assuming he doesn't turn face somewhere) but there's still a lot more mileage if they pulled the trigger on it.

Of course, until the swerve actually happens, I'm still expecting Cedric to continue his redemption story. 205 Live has straddled the line between doing the predictable (but solid) and experimenting so much that it's really impossible to tell where they're headed until they go there. If anything, it's at least a guarantee that we should keep watching: we may be in for a pleasant surprise. If we're good enough.

205 Live 3/12/19 Final Grade: This week's tournament matches were both great, proving why the people that have been chosen to participate are some of the best on the show right now. It's a lean and mean episode that does enough to keep us tuned next week for the finals. A

    Short stops

    • The promos to open the show this week were a nice touch.
    • Hoping Oney sticks around after that impressive performance. Can't get a guy up there like that and send him back down to NXT again. Make up for what you did to Roddy last year. (And the division needs new faces, anyway.)
    • That was one of the better Cedric Alexander wins I've seen in a while, mostly because I almost believed Oney might have run away with the match. I mean did you see that super half-and-half suplex?
    • Not sure how I feel about Nese winning via rollup, mainly because I think Drew Gulak deserves better than that.
