    Smark Hen-XT (3/15/19): The #DIY Implosion Redux

Well, what do we have here? Four main roster call-ups in NXT's main event of the night?

It is both great and sad seeing all four of these Superstars be put in a high profile bout, as part of a tournament to honor the late great Dusty Rhodes. It's great in the sense that, these four men have given NXT all they had for the past year or so, hence, they do deserve to be part of the glory that the trophy brings. However, it is sad knowing, that in a month's time, they'll probably be exclusively appearing on the main roster. Even worse, there's a possibility they could end up like Asuka, Shinsuke Nakamura, or all those other call-ups who started out strong but are now hovering in creative limbo or in meaningless stories at the moment.

Nonetheless, this finals qualifier did its part in advancing the story that had us questioning ourselves with every turn and angle that happened. It allowed the Johnny Gargano/Tommaso Ciampa story to culminate in a moment that could be reminiscent of #DIY's break-up. Only this time, the tables have turned, with Gargano getting the best of Ciampa.

I won't lie, the way this year's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic turned out wasn't really something I expected, especially since the guys in this semifinal match have all been called up to the main roster. It looks like NXT gave Aleister Black and Ricochet the win so they can end up in the Finals against the Forgotten Sons while, at the same time, giving Gargano and Ciampa a chance to reignite their longstanding feud.

With this, I do expect Aleister Black and Ricochet to face the War Raiders at TakeOver: New York in a fight to the death. The big question now is, what's next for Gargano and Ciampa? We all know Ciampa had neck surgery so it's going to take a while for his recovery and the eventual grudge match. For now, we can only hope that the Creative team can wiggle around this little bump and bring Gargano closer to his destiny of becoming NXT Champion.

    Grade: B

    Not-So-Full Sails:

    • Jaxson Ryker reminds me of a younger and buffer-looking Luke Harper. He does look more intimidating though so I hope he eventually gets his time to shine in NXT.
    • That Double Airplane Spin, the Double Hurracanrana and those moves that followed thereafter from Tyler Bate reminded me of how high an upside this guy has. I always wonder to myself what he did wrong and why he's not being pushed as much as he should be.
    • Is anybody a fan of that Forgotten Sons' tag team finisher? Not me. The stomp to the face looks sick, but the reverse DDT literally did next-to-nothing other than hold the opponent in place.
    • If they're building on the Forgotten Sons, then giving them the semis win is a good choice as they beat a credible team—former NXT Tag Team Champions at that. Otherwise, it's sad that Moustache Mountain lost this one.
    • Shayna Baszler laying waste to Kairi Sane, Bianca Belair, and Io Shirai was a good set-up for the eventual Fatal-4-Way match for the NXT Women's Championship.
    • I somewhat pray that Johnny Gargano is kept on NXT so they can await Tommaso Ciampa's eventual return. Plans do change a lot, so I hope this one does happen.
What do you think is next for the Gargano/Ciampa saga? Did you think NXT booked itself into a corner by having four main roster call-ups be part of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic? Are you looking forward to who Shayna Baszler will face at NXT TakeOver: New York? Tell us in the comments section below.
