Royal Rumble at Skinny Mike's: My First Viewing Party Experience

Last Monday was my first time joining a wrestling viewing party. I didn't know what to expect. I thought to myself, How do these things work? We watch on one big screen like those Manny Pacquiao fights? I figured it would be fun to join as WWE PPVs were something I actually watch on my own time, plus I also found myself pretty bored on the morning after PWR Live: New Year's Wrestle-ution.

I got up at around 5:00 a.m. and rushed to prepare for Skinny Mike's since the Royal Rumble viewing party was supposed to start at 6:00 a.m. It was pretty dark still, but I got there at 6:15 Aa.m.M as I lived quite nearby. It was surprising that not only was I not the first one there, but that the venue was already half full by then. Wow. It was still the pre-show and we already had maybe 30 to 40 people, give or take.

Skinny Mike's as a venue is great because it has these booths on the side which had their own semi-private television sets which meant, everywhere you sat, there would be at least a minimum of two TV's you could watch on. Hallelujah! I knew I'd enjoy the show as I sat in a prime spot with views of about five screens.

I'm not going to spend too much time talking about the results here because we have the official Smark Henry pay-per-review for that. That said, something surprising happened at the pre-show and even as early as that, everybody was shouting and cheering along with the unexpected result of the Rusev/Shinsuke Nakamura match.

I sat with the Smark Henry crew and ordered some food and a bottle of alcohol—yep, early drinks for everybody—while we slowly awaited the main show. In the words of the immortal Hulk Hogan, lemme tell you something, brother, Skinny Mike's has some of the best bar chow in BGC. I thoroughly enjoyed the fries and chicken.

The experience was great that early on and by the time the main show started, the venue was about full. People continued to flock in as the show went by and the cheers (and jeers) got louder and louder with every match. It was amazing for me that you had a bar full of Filipinos who loved wrestling as much as I did to wake up this early and watch live.

My favorite loud pop for the day was the one for Becky Lynch when she won the Women's Royal Rumble Match. Everybody really loved The Man so it was welcome to hear the deafening cheers for the Lass Kicker. The fans also loved chanting with the crowd, even going so far as to imitate the Paul Heyman schtick—even though it isn't really chantable because Heyman switches it up a lot—which goes to show how invested everybody was in the event.

Before the main event, Smark Henry and PWR held a little raffle for some PWR merchandise, tickets for this month's PWR Live: Nice and a cool Bobby Lashley action figure, which a few lucky fans were able to take home. Luckily, our nice friends from PWR, the Naughty Boys, were present to award the winners their prizes.

The Rumble began soon after, and tito feels aside, I felt quite old when I heard the distinct country sounds of ol' "Double J" Jeff Jarrett's music. It took a while for most to recognize but when he came out in those old school guitar tights (yes, I believe they're meant to simulate guitar strings), a faint pop could be heard from everybody discussing potential entrants and winners for this year's match.

All in all, the experience was definitely a good one and I'm definitely down to attend this year's WrestleMania viewing party as well so we'll see you at Skinny Mike's on the morning of April 8 (Manila time) for the Showcase of the Immortals! Make sure to come early so you can have a seat!
