The Grapevine (1/4/19): On "Mean" Gene

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the week.

We have some updates on "Mean" Gene's health prior to his passing:

    • Gene Okerlund apparently suffered a bad fall that accelerated his death. The fall left him with multiple broken ribs, which caused his health to decline rapidly and his breathing to become difficult. He was entered into a nursing home four days before his death. (Source: TMZ)
We say: Rest in peace, "Mean" Gene.
    • WWE is apparently now offering higher developmental deals than before. The company is apparently keeping up with the industry, realizing that wrestlers won't be easily signing with them because of their name and brand. One example of this was the second contract they tried to offer lucha libre star Bandido, who Ring of Honor intially offered a much higher contract than WWE's first offer. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)
We say: Well, it was only really a matter of time before WWE started keeping up with everyone else. It's good that they realized the big signings they were making for their developmental system were actually worth more.

Let us know what you think of this week's news in the comments!
