The MMC With Smark Henry (10/23/18): With Enemies Like Those, Who Needs Friends

It's all about the hugs in this week's episode of WWE Mixed Match Challenge as resident hug giver Bayley and teammate Finn Bálor made sure Team Pawz remain down in the dumps, while The Miz would like to be the last person to join a group hug.

With WWE Evolution looming at the time of this episode, friends turned into temporary enemies. Because of that, it's no surprise that the men were responsible for the victories in both matches.

This wasn't more evident than in the SmackDown group bout where Jimmy Uso amped up Naomi during the pre-show interview to fight new friend Asuka, while The Miz laid the groundwork from the beginning that there won't be shenanigans in their fight that night against Day One Glow.

The Miz averting himself from any form of intimate physical contact (I guess it's the luck of the draw that he has to face husband-and-wife teams in consecutive weeks) might make him seem like a cold person. But since we all know that he's married and we're all aware that he isn't firing blanks, maybe physical touch isn't his preferred love language. I won't judge him for that.

But one thing "The A-Lister" is prone to do is to put female companions ahead of him, this time letting Asuka take the fall for a diving Naomi while he goes for the finisher and the win, retaining their unbeaten streak in the entire history of the tournament. The ends justify the means, I guess? Also, is there dissension in Awe-Ska's ranks, leading to their first-ever loss down the road?

Over on the RAW side, the bond between Bayley and Natalya isn't that strong, but they have to preserve themselves for the first ever all-women's WWE PPV as they, along with Sasha Banks, will go up against the Riott Squad. This is why there was an apprehensive air of friendly competition between them.

In the end, Bobby Roode's hubris of wanting to land the Coup de Grace on Bálor cost his team the match as the Irish former Bullet Club leader successfully performed his trademark finish for the W, B'n'B's second in three matches.

To cap, the wrestling wasn't clean, but the spectacle was worth its salt.

    Mixes and Matches

    • Has anyone noticed that the teams have logos now?
    • Harkening back to a tradition in association football, Roode and Finn traded each other's robe and jacket. Unlike in "The Beautiful Sport" though, the ritual is done at the end of the match, not at the start, for obvious reasons.
    • Natalya isn't allowed to dive, while Asuka isn't allowed to dance or hug. Noted.
    • Yes, Bayley, it was ugly but you did it.
    • Rusev was killing the comment section. I shouldn't be surprised since he managed to pull off Big Bartholomew on Southpaw Regional Wrestling. I now dub thee white Big E.
    • That Day One Glow handshake was rad. Only that the Manny Jacinto-Pillboi handshake in the latest episode of The Good Place was the best handshake of the week.
    • It's safe spot-calling when the running hip attack should land at the middle turnbuckle instead of the head. But that's telegraphing it as it was obvious from a mile away, Naomi and Asuka.
    • If I would like Asuka to be pushed, it's a different kind of push. Becky Lynch vs. Asuka for the SmackDown Live Women's Championship, now na!
    • Alicia Fox is blonde now and she also already knows how to Shanti.
    • Before, Charlotte Flair was asking his partners to "Woo" and to "Woo" properly. Now, he's requiring AJ Styles to split. What's next, everybody should moonsault from the top rope?

A financial adviser and Certified Investment Solicitor (that is what the CIS stands for after his name) by profession, he catches up on his weekly dose of pro wrestling by streaming shows and using them as background noise while he is doing something else.
