Smark Henry's Favorite WrestleMania Moments: The 1 in 21-1

As we count the days down to WrestleMania 34 on April 9, we here at Smark Henry want to do something different than our usual trivia promotion. Over the next two weeks, we'll be sharing and talking about our favorite WrestleMania moments in the hopes of getting some more this year.

For the last few years, our WrestleMania countdown ended with one.

The one in 21-1, that is.

When the Undertaker answered Brock Lesnar's open contract to a match at WrestleMania XXX, many thought that it would simply be notch in The Streak. Another marquee name for the Deadman to cement his legacy as one of WrestleMania's elite performers. Lesnar had returned to the WWE in 2012, but had yet to convince that he was the one to finally end the Streak. He had dominated his matches, but had yet to pick up that win to really make his mark since coming back.

So when these two clashed at the Superdome, Undertaker was the odds-on favorite to win. Everyone expected him to conquer the Beast, make it to 22-0, and continue to wait for the next big name to end it all.

True to form, Lesnar dominated the match once again. We had seen Undertaker taken to his limits in previous WrestleManias by Shawn Michaels and Triple H before eking out the win, and it looked like that was the case here.

But when Brock Lesnar hit that third F-5, and the Undertaker stayed down for the count, the whole wrestling world was in collective shock.

23 years. 23 years of history, all put to a convincing end.

For many of us, it was a destruction of the Undertaker's mythical presence. Throughout that quarter of a century, we watched as the Undertaker asserted himself as the end boss of the WWE. We grew up watching this legend play out in real life. He had been taken to the limit, sure, but he always prevailed in the end. The streak was an immaculate thing, and many fans wanted to see it go on for a little while longer.

    Not this time.

In many ways, this was the beginning of the Brock Lesnar we have today—now, he is the end boss of the WWE. He didn't just take Undertaker's streak, he took his status as the WWE's mythical being. Now, it's Lesnar who has put himself on a level above everyone else, and we see this with how he carries himself as Universal Champion. He's not your workhorse who fights day in and day out, every day of the year. He's the guy who shows up when he wants to, when he can, because who's going to tell him otherwise?

All this ties in to tomorrow's main event, of course. At WrestleMania 34, Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns renew their rivalry once again as they compete for the Universal Championship. The 2 in 23-2 collide, and we may finally see someone unseat Lesnar from his throne at the top of the WWE.
