#MustWatchMonday (11/27/16): RPW Global Wars: Chris Hero vs. Tomohiro Ishii

You can find today's match on: RPW on Demand

As NJPW continues to expand and reach out to a more global audience, they've established working relationships with other major promotions from different countries. In the United States, they have Ring of Honor; and in Mexico, they have Consejo Mudial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Instead of limiting themselves to North America, however, they've also taken it upon themselves to capitalize on the now thriving European wrestling scene, particularly the one in the UK. To that end, they've established a working relationship with Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW). Much like they do with ROH and CMLL, NJPW holds a joint event with RPW once a year in the United Kingdom called Global Wars.

The cards for these events are normally stacked, with some really intriguing match-ups such as that of Katsuyori Shibata vs. Zack Sabre Jr., Yuji Nagata vs. Pete Dunne, as well as Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Marty Scurll. However, the most intriguing match-up, and the one with the most potential, was that of Chris Hero and Tomohiro Ishii. Hero is one of the best if not the best worker on the independent circuit now, and certainly one of the best ever, while Tomohiro Ishii is just a workhorse who even casual fans of NJPW should be familiar with.

As expected, the match is hard-hitting and brutal, filled with grunts, elbows, non-selling, and feats of strength. People familiar with the violent style these two men have should have an idea of how this match should go, but these guys just do it so amazingly that you can't stop watching. Ishii has this way of being both the ultimate underdog and a brutal powerhouse at the same time, and Chris Hero is great at being a dick and just laying it out on his opponents.

    Give this match a watch.

Brandon Sy is a PhD student in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics currently based in Sydney. Since he wasn't allowed to watch wrestling as a kid, he's been overcompensating ever since. Despite being a huge fan of Japanese wrestling, he still holds a soft spot in his heart for WWE's Kane. He's good for recommending matches from pretty much anywhere, whether it be Japan, Europe, the US or Mexico. He'd be ecstatic if you watched Dragon Gate though.
