The NXT Grapevine, October 2016: Bound For Toronto

With the next NXT TakeOver set for the historic city of Toronto, NXT has begun to build towards another showcase as it sets up feuds and matches on the weekly episodes of NXT. Once again, we've got the scoop on what will be happening in the next set of episodes, airing for the second half of October until early November. Read on ahead to find out what your favorite NXT wrestlers will be up to, or if we'll be seeing a new face soon!

As usual, we'll put a SPOILER WARNING here. The matches below have yet to be aired, so do not read them if you want to be spoiled. Do also note that things may be filmed out of order every now and then, so expect some changes and cuts when these matches hit the WWE Network.

    Airing on October 19:

    • NXT GM William Regal kicked off the show and announced Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: Toronto
    • Dusty Classic 1st Round Match: Rich Swann and No Way Jose def. Drew Gulak and Tony Nese
    • Bobby Roode def. Sean Maluta. Tye Dillinger came out afterwards and brawled with Roode. Dillinger vs. Roode is announced for NXT TakeOver: Toronto.
    • Billie Kay and Peyton Royce attack Liv Morgan backstage.
    • Dusty Classic 1st Round Match: Austin Aries and the debuting Roderick Strong def. Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovic (formerly Niko Bogojevic.)
    • Nikki Cross (w/ SAnitY) def. Danielle Kamela. Cross kept on attacking after the match, so the referee reversed the decision.
    • NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura came out to cut a promo, but was interrupted by Patrick Clark. Samoa Joe tried to attack Nakamura, but was fended off. Nakamura laid out Clark to send a message to Joe.

Thoughts: The Roderick Strong debut was being rumored for weeks now, and it's nice to see that we're getting that as early as next week on NXT. Roode and Dillinger squaring off in their home country of Canada is going to have an electric atmosphere, as they're two of NXT's most over guys.

Patrick Clark continuing to get airtime isn't bad as well. Hey, at least we got something good out of the latest edition of WWE Tough Enough!

    Airing on October 26:

    • Dusty Classic 1st Round Match: DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) def. Tian Bing and Hoho Lun.
    • Aliyah def. Billie Kay (w/ Peyton Royce.) Liv Morgan ran in for the distraction, followed by all 4 women brawling after the match.
    • Dusty Classic 1st Round Match: Kota Ibushi and WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins def. Mustafa Ali and Lince Dorado. Perkins was previously announced as a replacement for the injured Hideo Itami.
    • NXT Women's Champion Asuka def. Thea Trinidad. William Regal came out afterwards and announced that Asuka will be defending the championship at NXT TakeOver: Toronto against the returning Mickie James!
    • Tye Dillinger def. Noah Potjes. Bobby Roode came out and attacked Dillinger after the match.

Thoughts: Oh hey, Women's Division development! It's great to see they're building up more people aside from Asuka and Ember Moon. Mickie James returning is big news—she's an amazing wrestler, and is going to put on one hell of a match with NXT's Empress.

Also, here's a bonus picture of TJ Perkins teaching Ibushi how to dab, because you knew this was bound to happen.

    Airing on November 2:

    • Ember Moon def. Rachael Evers.
    • Dusty Classic Quarterfinal Match: DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) def. The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) via forfeit as an injured Dawson was not cleared to compete. The Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar) came out and attacked DIY, but DIY clear the ring.
    • "The Drifter" Elias Samson def. Nathan Cruz.
    • Liv Morgan def. Peyton Royce (w/ Billie Kay) via DQ. Aliyah came out to even the odds afterwards, followed by Ember Moon who laid out Kay and Royce.
    • Andrade 'Cien' Almas def. Cedric Alexander.
    • A contract signing for the NXT Championship match took place. William Regal and some security guards come out, followed by Shinsuke Nakamura. Samoa Joe followed but refused to enter the ring with Nakamura, so he set up his own table on the ramp. Both men signed the contract on their tables, then Nakamura attacked the security guards to send another message to Joe.
    • Dusty Classic Quarterfinal Match: SAnitY (Alexander Wolfe and Sawyer Fulton) def. Kota Ibushi and TJ Perkins.

Thoughts: I'm very surprised that the Cien vs. Cedric match took place here, as it looked like one of those matches that was bound to be set up for NXT TakeOver: Toronto. Then again, we might still get that match there. The Revival-DIY match not happening sounds disappointing, but they're probably setting it up for another title match at a later date.

The image of Joe setting up his own table because he doesn't to be with Nakamura is hilarious, though.

Just to recap, here's how NXT TakeOver: Toronto is shaping up to be:

    • NXT Championship Match: Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (c)
    • NXT Women's Championship Match: Mickie James vs. Asuka (c)
    • Bobby Roode vs. Tye Dillinger
    • Dusty Classic Semifinal Match: SAnitY vs. the winner of the TM-61/Austin Aries-Roderick Strong quarterfinal match
    • Dusty Classic Semifinal Match: DIY vs. the winner of the Authors of Pain/No Way Jose-Rich Swann quarterfinal match
With a couple of weeks left between these tapings and the big show, expect them to fill out the card with a match or two (perhaps an Almas-Alexander rematch, or a women's tag match) by then.
