    Smark Hen-XT (9/14/16): Unhinged

Seeing Samoa Joe with a mic in the ring has become one of my most must-watch moments in NXT these past few months. Only a handful of people can match him on the stick right now, and he once again proved that in this episode.

The show kicked off with a great segment from the former NXT Champion. He said that he realized that he’d been a dick since he set his sights on the championship. He then asked Shinsuke Nakamura to come down and challenged him to a rematch for the title once he becomes medically cleared. After walking out of the ring, Joe jumped Nakamura from behind and proceeded to destroy the current champion. An uranage to the steel steps left the King of Strong Style in so much pain that he had to be stretchered out.

It was a great way for NXT to build up on last week’s showing from Joe. Beneath a calm and collected façade lies a man utterly unhinged. Watching him snap and just brutalize Nakamura, a seemingly untouchable god in that ring, was just beautiful. The stretcher job might have been too much, but it did drill the idea that Joe is a true monster now. Even the tiny details like the constant update from the commentary team added to that.

It feels like Godzilla just got unleashed, and NXT better be prepared. Death and destruction are coming in the form of an unhinged Samoa Joe.

    The Rest of the Show:

    • Liv Morgan def. Rachel Faiza: God, this was all sorts of painful to watch. The promo afterwards wasn’t any better. I liked the story, though. Asuka’s run through the division, and the only ones left are the new gals. Seeing one of them rise up to the challenge is good, even if they sure as hell aren’t ready for it. Good job, kid, and good luck keeping your head attached to your neck.

    • Hideo Itami def. Drew Gulak: My biggest problem with this match was it was short. Give these guys 15 minutes, and you’ll have one of the stiffest matches in the world. I’d love to see Gulak stick around. He has indy cred but not the instant name recognition, and it gives NXT leeway to play around with his gimmick.

    • The Authors of Pain (w/ Paul Ellering) def. Doug Sessa and Chris Payne: AoP is slowly becoming more creative with their destructive ways, and that’s always a good thing. I hope Ellering finally speaks up soon though. That should be gold.

    • Bobby Roode def. No Way Jose: Roode showed up on a spinning pedestal bathed in white light. Yes, he is GLORIOUS. The match itself was a glorified squash match. Not sure what happened to the Glorious Bomb, but the lifting DDT finisher is meh.

Despite Samoa Joe practically carrying the show with a stellar opening segment, the rest of the card is still floundering. It doesn’t help that we only really have one active storyline being built up. I’m hoping NXT sorts themselves out ASAP. The episode gets a B-.
