The Grapevine (1/6/16): The Siege of New Japan, Day 2

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Grapevine! This is our daily post rounding up all the interesting rumors from the wild, wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

We have even more updates on the biggest story opening 2016:

    • As of now, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, and Doc Gallows have not signed with the WWE yet. Even though the WWE acknowledging these rumors on their website makes it a pretty sure thing for all four to come to the company, they are still unsigned. Styles and Gallows are no longer contracted with NJPW, while Nakamura and Anderson are—and while they still are, they can't even negotiate with the WWE.

Styles was written out of NJPW through the Bullet Club turning on him (although Gallows and Anderson were not kicked out of the group with him), while Kenny Omega issued a challenge for Nakamura's IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

NJPW officials were reportedly upset that news broke out over the four leaving, as Japan tries to keep storylines top secret. Styles and Nakamura will most likely be heading straight to the main roster, with a surprise Royal Rumble appearance possibly penciled in for Styles. There was also word that Nakamura might be spending some time in NXT to learn the style, but none of these plans are confirmed at all. (Source: PWInsider, Wrestling Observer Radio)

We say: What completely amazes us about this news is WWE's unprecedented acknowledgment of rumors by fanning the fire on their website. It seems like they're starting a new war, and this should be really interesting. Doing so pretty much confirms the rumors, a complete turnaround from previous policy of ignoring these things and going about business as usual. It's not like they were absolutely forced to show their hand this early, especially when the angles over on the NJPW side have yet to play out. Is this the Triple H influence creeping up on the company? We now wait with bated breath for more updates on this, and how they will be handling rumors like this in the future.

    • Aside from the four NJPW stars rumored to be leaving, Rocky Romero is also said to be leaving the company for WWE. Romero, who is only 33 and a former ROH Tag Team Champion and a five-time IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, is apparently in talks for trainer role with the WWE. (Source: WrestlingInc)

    We say: NORI NORI DAZE!

What do you think? Are you excited for this, or sad that some of NJPW's biggest stars are leaving?
