The Smark Henry Pay-Per-Review: WrestleMania Backlash 2022

WrestleMania Backlash could not have come at a worse time for Filipinos: with the fate of the country hanging squarely in the balance, this premium live event, with its utter lack of stakes, feels like a sad, pedestrian afterthought in the 24 hours it was a part of.

If anything, though, it's a nice exercise in how to put together a wrestling show. A lack of major defining matches aside, most wrestling companies nowadays have problems staging a show that just is, oftentimes preferring to go grand and long when they should just be. WrestleMania Backlash didn't have many stories to show as the night that was supposed to run WrestleMania back—and it knew that enough to not overstay its welcome.

What results is a nice three-hour special that feels like a step above your usual episodes of RAW and SmackDown. It's a perfectly serviceable wrestling program because it's all action and less sports entertainment segments. It advances some stories and wraps up a couple, and if it were still the old pay-per-view era where people were expected to cough up $60, it likely wouldn't have been worth the PPV price.

For those looking for a premium live event just to have that monthly major event for WWE stories to build up to, WrestleMania Backlash isn't terrible at all. It has, as I said, just come at a bad time, a time when many fans might not have been able to be mentally present to process the show. In the end, it's a show you simply have to watch to stay updated.

    Match of the Night

Cody Rhodes is here to prove that he's world championship material, and to be fair, he's been getting that platform to shine. There's no stopping the train of momentum he's on, as what most expected to be a loss ended up being another win on his belt, and it was pretty entertaining too. I'm not saying a lot of the other matches were bad, but when you're given time to shine and create some drama, you're likely going to do just that, and that's what Cody and Seth did.
