The Grapevine (5/23/22): Sasha Banks and Naomi Issue Expected To Get Worse, Stephanie McMahon Update

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Sasha Banks and Naomi issue expected to get worse

The feeling in WWE is that the situation with Sasha Banks and Naomi is going to "get worse before it gets better." It's possible that WWE could consider the situation a breach of their contract and possibly freeze the deals, stopping them from wrestling for other companies. Although support for the two is strong among fans, management is very unhappy and as mentioned previously, most of the locker room does not have sympathy.

Another possible detail revealed is that Banks was unhappy about the direction for the SmackDown Women's Championship at the last WrestleMania, noting that it was supposed to have been her versus Charlotte Flair at the event before management got word of Ronda Rousey returning. We say: Judging from what we've seen on social media since the walkout on last week's RAW, Sasha doesn't seem all that bothered about not being with WWE, and she should stay that way. While the company rarely ever budges from public sentiment, we'd love to see how far they can push this legal issue—if it gets down to court, this might just be the case that completely changes the way pro wrestling promotions, especially WWE, do business with independent contractors. We might very well be at the cusp of a huge moment for the business here.

Update on Stephanie McMahon stepping away from duties

Stephanie McMahon's announcement to step away from her duties in WWE is also apparently due to some private matters. While it has largely been attributed to her wanting to "focus on family," the real reasons likely won't ever be revealed, and there are no hints on what it could be. WWE has also been removed from her work history on her public LinkedIn profile. (Source: Wade Keller, David Bixenspan)

We say: Interesting. But we'll likely never know what it is due to what seems to be a highly private issue, so the rumors will just continue to swirl.
