Theme Song Tuesday: They're the Meaning In Your Life, They're the IInspiration

It's been about half a year since The IIconics were released from their WWE contracts, and they've spent that time rebranding as The IInspiration and going by their ring names from their indy days, Jessie McKay and Cassie Lee. They've also spent the last six months doing interviews, starting their own podcast, and generally building up hype for their in-ring return. It finally happened at last weekend's Bound For Glory 2021, where they won the Impact Knockouts Tag Team Championships in their debut match. Not a bad use of the last half-year, to be honest.

When they made their entrance at Bound For Glory, they also trotted out singer Harley Cameron, the voice behind their brand new entrance theme, appropriately named after them. And that's why we're talking about The IInspiration on this week's #ThemeSongTuesday!

"The IInspiration" is a midtempo R&B track that could get you dancing and feeling yourself within seconds after pressing play. It's not your typical wrestling theme that gets you in the mood to whoop some ass. But it does inspire confidence because it's got a girl power vibe that doesn't get in your face.

The song's beat very much sounds like Christina Aguilera's "Can't Hold Us Down" (2002), and I wouldn't be surprised if this was a key influence in the song. The Xtina song was ahead of its time, talking about female empowerment and putting weak, insecure men in their place way before #MeToo was in vogue.

Sticking with the theme of early 2000s influences, I also heard traces of Britney Spears's "I'm A Slave 4 U" (2001) in "The IInspiration." When Harley Cameron starts getting breathy in her vocal delivery, it harkens back to when Britney and her music started tapping into its more sensual side. Even the melodies have a few similarities, particularly the verses in "I'm A Slave 4 U" and the pre-chorus in "The IInspiration." I'm not saying that the producers of The IInspiration's theme plagiarized anything. As a lover of all things pop from the early 2000s, I actually love the callbacks.

Harley Cameron isn't new to the music game or even the wrestling industry. The Australian singer is married to NXT 2.0's Xyon Quinn and is good friends with The IInspiration and the likes of Scarlett and Shotzi Blackheart. In fact, earlier this year, Cameron released a single entitled "Indestructible," which featured both Scarlett and Shotzi on vocals and in the music video! Cameron's vocals stand out as the most pop-sounding among the three, and she brings the same sound to "The IInspiration," reminding me very much of SZA and Camila Cabello.

I love it whenever music and pro wrestling intersect, and this is another one of those crossovers I'll keep rooting for just because of how it puts two of my hobbies together. Sure, Jessie and Cassie don't really sing on their own theme song, even though they're credited in it as featured artists. They look really great dancing in the music video, though, and more importantly, they're owning being The IInspiration. And look where that's gotten them. They're the new Impact Knockouts Tag Team Champions.

    Congrats, ladies!
