The Grapevine (10/11/21): Gable Steveson Planned For WrestleMania, Frustration With WWE's Booking of Women, Plans For Reigns/Lesnar

    Gable Steveson

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

WWE is already planning Gable Steveson's debut at WrestleMania

WWE is fast-tracking NCAA heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson's debut for next year's WrestleMania. Steveson, who was drafted to RAW last week, is under an NIL contract with WWE, which allows him to sign with businesses while still retaining his college eligibility. The college wrestling season ends in March, which would give him some time to prepare for a WrestleMania match in April. (Source: WON)

We say: To anyone doubting whether Gable Steveson could hack it in so quick a time, remember what the WWE accomplished with Bad Bunny. Now take a natural athlete like Steveson and give him the same kind of training, and you'll probably get a better return on your investment.

Backstage frustration on WWE's booking of women

There is reportedly some frustration being felt by wrestlers and staff over the booking of women who are not top stars. This past Friday on SmackDown, the first two Queen's Crown matches were given only two minutes of TV time. (Source: Fightful Select)

We say: Not that we want to defend this treatment of women (which isn't even just a women-only thing as the men can also get limited minutes at times), but this is looking a lot like a good reason to give SmackDown a third hour. Not saying that it will, but if they don't want to exercise any political will to split the time evenly, that might be the only way. You don't actually get this problem a lot on RAW, which has more than enough time to give to everyone.

Plans for Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar

Roman Reigns is not dropping the championship anytime soon, and may face Brock Lesnar at next year's WrestleMania if the Rock isn't available. The feud is not ending at Crown Jewel, and the company is committed to keeping him champion for a long time. Lesnar is also not scheduled for any more matches after Crown Jewel next week. Reigns is the top merchandise mover in WWE at the moment, on the level of John Cena at his peak, despite being a heel. (Source: WON)

We say: They finally got Roman to be the top guy they've always wanted him to be all along, and all it took was them doing it the right way. Let's hope this is a lesson to the company to not force things that shouldn't be forced.
