NXT in the UK (9/30/21): The Gallus Way

    Jordan Devlin and Joe Coffey

This week on NXT UK, the brand wraps up a few loose threads before rushing headlong into its big title stories this month.

Not sure what Gallus is anymore

Being a rebuild week preparing for the bigger stories happening this month, there's not really much to report from this week's episode. The wrestling is solid, as usual, with a banger of a tag team match between Moustache Mountain and Oliver Carter and Ashton Smith opening the show, and a solid grindfest main event between Jordan Devlin and Gallus's Joe Coffey. If you've got the time, you should go watch those.

Coffey is, as always, a treat to watch, especially if you're like me and appreciate the brutal Japanese style being incorporated in Western wrestling. Devlin is also effectively a heavyweight now, and I'd love to see him get called up to the main roster and show the world what he could do. I just wonder what the endgame really is for all the NXT UK talent given stateside NXT's new direction, because I can't imagine them just languishing in the regional promotion.

If there's anything to nitpick in this match, it's that I'm completely baffled as to what Gallus is after pretty much cheating to help Coffey beat Devlin. Up until this point, Gallus have been portrayed as faces, so this mischievous edge is certainly a shock. I hope they'll be addressing this in succeeding episodes, because it's not something you just sweep under the rug.

    NXT UK 9/30/21 Grade: A-

    Bits and pieces

    • Charlie Dempsey, who has apparently already wrestled in NXT UK under his real name, feels like the WWE's answer to Zack Sabre, Jr. He's very good, and I expect him to be on the main roster in a few years. They're really not playing up his connection to William Regal, which may or may not be a good thing, but I have a feeling Vince is going to change that.
    • Xia Brookside loses again, and looks like she'll be turning heel eventually. It's a shame because she is such a good face wrestler and they never really gave her the chance to be consistent as one. I feel like wrestlers in the WWE keep having to turn heel just to mature as characters, but it feels like writers just don't know how to book faces.
