NXT in the UK (9/16/21): It's A Heel's World Out There

    Sam Stoker and Joe Coffey

This week on NXT UK, the red-and-black brand makes up for last week's replay main event with two bangers.

    It's a heel's world, we're just living in it

We're living in a world of heels as the bad guys all dominated on this week's episode. The main event was an NXT UK Tag Team Championship defense between the champs Pretty Deadly and the Coffey brothers team of Gallus, which was one hell of a match.

The champs have come such a long way from being an enhancement team to highly competent tag team champions, managing to go over established teams like Gallus and Moustache Mountain in ways that are both extremely competitive without stealing too much of the spotlight. Pretty Deadly has found their niche as a credible heel team that doesn't overwrestle to the point where people are outright waiting to cheer them because they're so good. I feel like they'll eventually turn face with their work, though, and when that happens it'll be their time to shine.

In the opening UK Heritage Cup Contenders' Tournament match, evil Scots Noam Dar and Kenny Williams tried to out-dirty the other, with Dar eventually coming out on top as an OG bad guy with the help of his friend Sha Samuels. For a moment it seemed like Williams was the bigger heel, only for ol' Noam to employ dirty tactics when it looked like he was the face in peril. Score one more for the heels of the brand.

The episodes of NXT UK may not always be as eventful as this week's, but you can guarantee that they pack some good action on the regular. That's because the multiple storytelling fronts allow them to focus on a couple of major threads every week, even if they're not the main event, which is something shows like Dynamite can learn from. It goes without saying that this week's NXT UK is a must-watch if you've got the hour to spare for some solid wrestling, as it's that time of the cycle where business is picking up again.

    NXT UK 9/16/21 Grade: A

    Bits and pieces

    • One week after replaying Dragunov vs. WALTER II, the show is already lining up its next potential challengers for the title, setting up a triple threat between A-Kid, Nathan Frazer, and Rampage Brown to determine a new #1 contender. This is what I like, and I hope that the Dragunov era of the UK Championship sees a lot more happening in the main event. While WALTER's three-year reign was legendary, it was largely built on him not showing up regularly, and I don't want this to be the case for Dragunov. I would much rather have a relatively shorter reign if it means he shows up more.
    • William Regal's kid Bailey Matthews is now known as Charlie Dempsey, and I almost didn't recognize him because they showed his face too quickly. I'm now not making too big of a deal about WWE not fully recognizing next-generation wrestlers, as they'll probably get around to it when they really want to.
