Finisher Friday (9/24/21): Chen and Garza: An Analysis of Wing Clippers

Welcome to another edition of #FinisherFriday! This is Wreddit_Regal bringing you a short comparison between two finisher variations.

A wrestler going by the name of Dante Chen has made waves in the Internet wrestling community when he debuted on NXT last Tuesday. The first wave was one of pride and representation: he was the first pure Southeast Asian wrestler to make it to WWE soil. The second wave, however, leaned a bit on the negative side.

During his debut match, he showcased his talent to the NXT crowd's liking, up to when he performed his finisher:

Apparently some jimmies were rustled online, and they took to complaining on Twitter:

I guess some people want to add drama in and out of kayfabe

The reason being that Dante Chen seemingly copied Angel Garza's Wing Clipper:

In Dante Chen's defense, he's been doing it before he went to NXT, using it interchangeably with his Exclamation Point powerbomb. Here's a GIF of him doing it to Jake de Leon at PWR Live: Beautiful in 2019:

My personal opinion regarding having the same finishers, is that it's no one's personal property. However, it's up to the wrestler to make the audience go "His finisher's unlike any *insert finisher* that I've seen before!" I mean, take a look at the humble cutter. It's been used by wrestlers from different generations (Johnny Ace/DDP/Karl Anderson/Randy Orton), yet you don't hear anyone complaining about the new guys stealing from the veterans because they added their own nuances and spices to the move.

    Ace Crusher

    Diamond Cutter

    Gun Stun

    RKO

Back to the finisher of interest. Since this is #FinisherFriday, let's be a bit analytical and do a side-by-side comparison of the two clippers:

Take a look at the opponent's right arm in both GIFs. With Chen's front facelock hold, the opponent can still sneak in a couple of desperation shots to the side, which could prove disastrous if they had a considerable amount of strength left. However, with Garza's butterfly hook, his opponent's arm only reaches empty air.

Another point to note is how both finishers specifically deal damage. Both primarily deal damage to the neck, as they perform an instantaneous neck crank upon landing arse-first on the mat. Chen slightly loses the neck crank battle because the front facelock hold doesn't tuck the opponent's head as tightly as Garza's butterfly lock, but gladly accepts that deficiency in exchange for another attacking point: the left shoulder. Forcing the opponent to lean forward while keeping the shoulder in a stationary position causes an abrupt pull, which can render the opponent unable to raise his arm to break the pinfall that follows.

Using my Regal Rating, I would rate Chen's Clipper a:

8/10 for aesthetics. Unlike Garza who likes to pause and show off before delivering the final blow, Chen likes to keep it fast and simple, which adds to the explosiveness of the move.

8/10 for damage. Try raising your left arm in the same position as Chen's opponent, and quickly lean forward while keeping your arm position in place. That self-inflicted amount of pain on your shoulder is nowhere like what Chen's victim experiences as the move's receiver.

And there you have it chaps, my short comparison of Dante Chen and Angel Garza's finishers! Do you happen to have another situation of two wrestlers having the same finisher in mind? Let us know in the comment section below!
