The Grapevine (5/3/21): AEW's Second TV Show May Be Affected By New TNT-NHL Deal, Rebellion Best-Performing Impact Show In Years

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

AEW's planned second TV show may be affected by TNT's new NHL deal

There is a chance that Turner Sports' new deal with the NHL could affect the debut of AEW's second television show. The show, which is reportedly scheduled to begin in the third quarter of the year, may be delayed due to the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs happening at around the same time. Although Dynamite will be bumped off Wednesdays during the NBA playoffs this summer, the show will likely stay on Wednesdays during the NHL playoffs. AEW signed an extension with TNT last year, which apparently included a new TV show. We say: Looks like Dynamite will remain single-brand for the foreseeable future, which is definitely going to continue affecting the way it tells its stories.

Rebellion reportedly best Impact PPV in years

Impact Wrestling's Rebellion PPV is apparently the best-performing PPV the company has had in years. The early PPV numbers are estimated to be around 9,300. The streaming numbers alone were far more than total PPV buys for any Impact show since Anthem's acquisition of the company in 2017. The show was headlined by the AEW Championship vs. Impact World Championship match between Kenny Omega and Rich Swann, which Omega won. (Source: WON)

We say: Good news for Impact—it means the partnership is already paying dividends for the company, even if it's horribly lopsided creatively in AEW's favor. It's okay, though; eventually Impact will have to win it back in the end because it has to, and the anticipation of who's going to win it back for them will be enough to keep drawing them ratings.
