The Grapevine (1/27/21): WWE Planning Crazy Royal Rumble Finish, Why Edge's Return Was Announced, WrestleMania Update

    WWE Royal Rumble match

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

WWE planning "crazy" finish for men's Royal Rumble

Sources within WWE are claiming that creative is planning a "scary" finish to the men's Royal Rumble match this Sunday. There aren't many details from the source, other than them claiming that it "scares the death out of them" and that it is getting "heavy consideration." (Source: @WrestleVotes)

We say: @WrestleVotes has a good track record with rumors so it's a good bet to believe in this one. What is open to interpretation is the finish being scary—is that fear for physical safety or scary as in "why would you book this winner?" If it's the former, it may have something to do with fire as RAW creative has been pretty liberal with their use of it over the past couple of months with Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton. Let's hope it's just the latter, that it's a left-field booking decision.

    Why WWE announced Edge's return

WWE announced Edge's return at the Royal Rumble match instead of keeping it a surprise because there wasn't going to be a crowd. This is also the thinking behind announcing #1, #2, and #30 on Backstage. Had there been a crowd, they likely would've saved it and done the surprise, but the feeling is that they need all the buzz they can get for this year's Rumble, which the announcement can bring. We say: Honestly, this was the right call. There likely will still be surprise entries as not everyone could be announced in time, but the more hyped you can get people in time, the better.

WWE needs four major matches for WrestleMania

While it was reported that there were no solid WrestleMania plans in place yet, the goal for Creative is to field four major matches for the two-day event, two for each night. However, exactly who is involved isn't clear nor finalized just yet, but we will likely see some big part-timers, such as John Cena and Goldberg. (Source: @WrestleVotes)

We say: That's to be expected already, we guess. But why not try for a big main event without the need for part-timers? Just a thought.
