The Grapevine (9/23/20): Retribution Received Poorly Backstage, Jeff Hardy's New WWE Deal, Aalyah Mysterio Update

Retribution and Bobby Lashley on WWE RAW

Welcome to the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the important founded and unfounded rumors floating around the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the past few days. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

    Retribution being received poorly backstage

The Retribution angle is reportedly not being received well by fellow WWE wrestlers backstage. Anonymous WWE sources are saying that the wrestlers involved in the faction have a challenging road ahead of them due to creative's treatment of the angle, and that the segments and the new names have been "met with laughter backstage." Another source wonders why SmackDown hasn't been as micromanaged poorly as RAW. It's also being said that there is no long-term plan for Retribution other than an elimination match at Survivor Series. (Source: @Wrestlevotes, Fightful Select, PWInsider)

We say: When people decide to go to AEW over staying in WWE (especially if they're not top stars with cushy pushes), they'll point to Retribution as the reason why. Nobody knows why Retribution is written the way it is—we don't even think Vince McMahon is worldly enough at this point to try and lampoon Antifa—but it's just not working. Unless, of course, you're just content to collect a paycheck without caring how you look like on TV, which is also totally valid, but at some point that will come around to affect the money you make, one way or another.

Jeff Hardy signs new deal with WWE, to bring back "No More Words"

Jeff Hardy has stated that he has signed a new contract with WWE, which is around two to three years in length, not five years. There is also some added time to his deal due to his time away with injury. A part of the deal is reportedly to bring back his popular "No More Words" theme, but only when live crowds return to events. (Source: PWInsider)

We say: Interesting development, as many of us were predicting he would go and join Matt in AEW. WWE must have offered a really sweet deal that many others never got, and we're not entirely sure Jeff is worth that investment at this point in his career. But the injury-riddled SmackDown does need all the stars it can get, so maybe he is worth it.

Notes on Aalyah Mysterio's WWE involvement

Aalyah Mysterio will reportedly not go on to become a wrestler like Dominik; instead, she will apparently be an actress. The rumored plan is to have Aalyah turn on the Mysterio family somewhere down the line. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)

We say: That's... uh, an interesting path to take for an acting career, but we suppose it's worked for people like The Rock, Edge, John Cena, and Sasha Banks. Let's just hope they won't be overexposed, but at the rate the Mysterio/Rollins feud is still going, that's probably already foregone by now.
