    #ThemeSongTuesday: Fall and Pray

Karrion Kross and Scarlett have been on NXT for about a couple of months and I've been a fan of how they've been presented to us thus far. The menacing aura that envelops their characters definitely starts with the music they walk out to. Thankfully, WWE Music didn't make us wait too long before uploading Kross's full entrance theme on YouTube and Spotify. How uncharacteristic of them!

As your Theme Song Tuesday scribe, I might as well break it down for you in this week's column:

In case you missed it, WWE Music Group has been using Def Rebel as its production name. They silently made the change back in May, shortly after it was reported that WWE and CFO$ were no longer working together. "Dead Silent" is one of the first tracks WWE Music Group released under the Def Rebel name and... well... you can see how they're trying to separate themselves from CFO$ and its tendencies while relying on some old bad habits.

    First, the positives.

Karrion Kross and Scarlett are two of the darker characters throughout NXT's history, so it's only fitting that their theme song be ominous as fuck. You hear it in the opening seconds, with the guitar being plucked into a terrifying riff, signaling what's coming. And then a whoosh ushers in a crisp bass line that goes hard as soon as the drums come in. It's a steady beat leading into the terrifying vocals of a female singer, who doesn't mince words about who's on his way out. He is time, famine, war, pestilence... You cannot endure. From there, it's as if she's taunting you because there is no escape. The end is here. The end is here.

If there weren't a deadly pandemic, I would have wanted to see Kross and Scarlett debut as thousands of fans chant/scream "FALL AND PRAY" over and over again. I'm not gonna lie, that shit's actually pretty catchy. The drums increasing in speed and intensity, along with the guitars and bass going as hard as they can, make for a really imposing aura that should literally scare the shit out of you. I'm guessing that's what Def Rebel was going for here. But since we don't have the option of having fans in attendance—and for good reason—Scarlett ends up looking silly when she sings along to her own theme song and encourages absolutely nobody fellow WWE developmental talent to fall and pray.

What I don't appreciate about the full version that WWE Music uploaded is their attempt at turning this song into a loop. "Dead Silent" was released as a full track at 2:57, but when you listen to the entire thing, the song crescendos at the 1:17 mark with the deadly "FALL AND PRAY" chants before... segueing into the opening beat all over again. And repeat. Welp. That's a CFO$ style loop if I haven't heard one, and a lazily executed one, at that.

I wish WWE Music just uploaded the entire song on its own, despite it being short. It's not like we'll need to hear a loop anytime soon since entrances on TV are dramatically shorter without any real crowd interaction. Besides, hearing a song that shouldn't be a loop get turned into a loop just sounds awkward, so I don't really see why this had to be done. The song structure is simple: it starts and builds up into something explosive and then you're left with the fallout. There's no need to put it on loop. Worry about that if/when Karrion Kross actually wins the NXT Championship.

What do you think of "Dead Silent?" Should it merit consideration for Theme Song of the Year, at least as a frontrunner? Let us know in the comments section!
