#FinisherFriday (7/10/20): Tag Finishers That Could Have Been Done With One Guy—Killer Bomb

Disclaimer: The point of this article is not to degrade any wrestling team's finisher in any way, but to objectively point out any advantages and disadvantages of the said finishers from a one-man version of it.

Welcome to another edition of #FinisherFriday! We are currently on the third Friday of the series, and if you haven't caught up with the previous articles, you can read them here and here. Today we analyze another NJPW tag team's finisher to see if it can be done with one guy while yielding the same results.

Debuting in shocking fashion as they immediately captured the IWGP Tag Team Championships in 2012, The Killer Elite Squad (KES) is not a team to be taken lightly in the NJPW landscape. Acting as the enforcers of Suzukigun, they have since brought many accolades to their own faction (fun fact: they were the first ones to bring gold to Suzukigun by winning the tag titles). Adding to their collective resume, they are also two-time holders of the NWA World Tag Team Championship and two-time GHC Tag Team Champions.

Two large guys forming a tag team means that their team arsenal consists of dishing out damage in any way possible, regardless of aesthetic value. Cue in their collective finisher, and their brute moveset is complete. Behold, the Killer Bomb:

From the way this finisher is set up, the viewer is made to believe that Smith's powerbomb is the main attack, with Archer adding force to the downward fall with his full nelson slam. The first half is true, but the latter part isn't because of the following reason:

A single person can fully utilize the powerbomb's mechanics if the opponent's upper body is as high as possible and perpendicular to the canvas. This ensures that the performer can fully use his upper-body strength to drive the opponent's back to the canvas, and the opponent being as high as possible means that there is a longer distance to travel, which directly increases the velocity and the resulting force generated.

For a crude comparison, hitting a person's head with a steel chair is most effective when the performer is able to do a full swing, as per the example below:

Archer's full nelson doesn't really allow the opponent to be propped as high as possible, and actually lowers the opponent's elevation, thereby reducing the distance travelled and ultimately the damage produced. You can even see in the GIF below that Archer releases the full nelson, and doesn't give a downward pull, effectively making his presence mere eye candy:

So how can the assisting wrestler actually add that extra velocity to the powerbomb? Common sense dictates that they should put the opponent as high as possible, and aid in slamming the opponent downward, like in the GIF below:

Luckily, they also a variation in which Archer releases the full nelson, and transition into actually raising the opponent up and pushing him downwards:

See how EVIL's head bounces like a medicine ball with that added force? That's a textbook-form two-man powerbomb for me.

Final verdict: The Killer Bomb's base from doesn't really deal more damage than a regular powerbomb, but if KES were to regularly do the variation instead, then it could be a terrifying finisher to receive. Have you seen how Lance Archer chokeslams his opponents? That's some nasty force added to Smith's powerbomb if you'd ask me:

And there you have it chaps, part three of "Tag Finishers That Could Have Been Done With One Guy"! Do you have suggestions on what tag finisher to cover next? Let us know in the comment section below!
