On this week's episode of Powerrr, the Aldis/Scurll saga takes a backseat to the brewing discontent in the women's division (good), but the Dokken theme goes away for some reason (bad). Let's get to it.
I wouldn't go so far to say that the women work harder than the men (as most everyone on this show is pretty talented) but whenever Allysin Kay and Thunder Rosa take the ring, you can bet that they're going to try and steal the show. We've seen it at Hard Times, and we'll see it again on this episode.
After the fakeout that was everyone giving Marti Belle the side-eye a month ago, it seems that it's pretty clear now that Thunder Rosa is being set up to break free from Melina's grasp. If you've been following along since Rosa first started the alliance, you'll know that it hasn't been the cleanest story they've been telling, so I'm glad that they've settled on this direction. It's the right one, too, as Rosa has deservedly earned the crowd's admiration.
That said, they're just making Marti look stupid out there—why did she run out? Who was she trying to spoil the match for? If it was for herself, she didn't even do anything. If it was for Melina (who's next in line for the title) then what would costing either woman the match really accomplish? Obviously intended to sow dissent, but it wasn't executed in any impactful way.
That said, still catch this match, and still catch this episode. It's loaded with a lot of good wrestling, and I'd say the show's found its bearings even more after Cornette left. (Not to say, of course, that Cornette is the reason for quality.)
NWA Powerrr 2/4/20 Grade: A hot opening match with TV title implications, a Trevor Murdoch match, and the main event all make for a solid episode. A-
The Powerrr Train
- So about the theme change... no. Just no. Dokken's "Into the Fire" gave this show the identity that hooked a lot of people in, including myself. Pantera is Pantera, but it feels like run-of-the-mill metal to me.
- I wonder what Cornette would've thought of guys like Matt Cross on his show, though. He's quite the solid add for Powerrr, especially with Lucha Underground gone.
- We really have a black wrestler calling himself Mims, huh. Is he hoping no one who lived through the 2000s would remember?
- I also wonder how much of this push Trevor Murdoch's experiencing right now is coming from a groundswell of support because people are seeing him on TV again. The guy's good, though, he deserves it.
