Live From the 205 (4/16/19): It's Nese To Have You

It's been a week after WrestleMania. I apologize to anyone who follows this column for the late revert (I don't have any excuses, really) but how interesting is it that 205 Live followed through and made a new star in Tony Nese?

The show has been in rebuilding mode since before the big show, thanks to a couple of key departures, and you can be forgiven for thinking that this really isn't the most compelling stretch it's ever had. They're in a space where they're trying to see what they come up with, and as a wrestling fan who likes to see new things every now and then, I definitely appreciate that. I definitely appreciate them taking a chance on Tony Nese.

Nese, while not the best talker in the division, is a wonderful worker to watch. He's got the look, he's ridiculously athletic (too athletic to be a heel, even, but both these traits pull him in either direction), and he's a hard worker in the ring. 205 Live absolutely needs new faces to help carry the cruiserweight division (because we can't have too much Cedric) and while others are being built up, Nese is a good talent to test.

The show's new mission to try new things doesn't stop with Tony Nese either. Jack Gallagher also turns against his friend Drew Gulak, effectively dismantling the stable Gulak built a year ago. I don't know yet if this is him taking pity on the young Humberto Carrillo, or him looking out for himself, but it's an interesting wrinkle to have while the purple brand rebuilds.

Right now, 205 Live honestly isn't that much to look at at the moment, but if you like your pro wrestling pure, this is still the show to watch. Just stick with it as it figures out where it's going.

205 Live 4/16/19 Final Grade: The main event is pretty much a slightly longer rehash of the match Nese and Murphy had at WrestleMania, and the other match is an over-too-soon story bout to highlight Gallagher splitting from Gulak. B

    Short stops

    • At this point, I actually miss Mike Kanellis's matches. I wish we had another one instead of an extra-long Nese/Murphy rematch.
    • How easy is it to pressure Drake Maverick to agree to a match you pitch? Just go interrupt him while he's having a meeting and intimidate him.

205 Live Rankings As of 4/15/19

Believe it or not, the Smarkometrics Experience Xtreme doesn't actually change much after WrestleMania:
    1. Tony Nese (no movement) — A strong week solidifies the Premier Athlete's claim to the top of the mountain.
    2. Buddy Murphy (no movement) — Buddy suffers two straight losses in a row. How will he rebound from this?
    3. Oney Lorcan (#4 last week) — Oney gets a rematch against Cedric Alexander next week. That doesn't really count for anything on its own, but he's coming into this with more momentum.
    4. Mike Kanellis (#3 last week) — We haven't heard from Mike this week, and I wonder what's next for him.
    5. Humberto Carillo (#9 last week) — Humberto technically beats Jack Gallagher by DQ this week, but now he's got Gallagher on his side.
    6. Lucha House Party (no movement) — The Party is just there. Really just there.
    7. Cedric Alexander (#8 last week) — See Oney Lorcan.
    8. Akira Tozawa (#5 last week) — See Mike Kanellis.
    9. Jack Gallagher (#10 last week) — Decides to split from Drew Gulak, gaining himself some momentum.
    10. Drew Gulak (no movement) — Gulak loses all his friends, but it seems like he never really wanted any to begin with. What's next for him?
