The MMC With Smark Henry (10/30/18): Favorites Win

This season of WWE Mixed Match Challenge chugs along with the status quo retained—the unbeaten teams emerging on top against the lovable losers. Fenomenal Flair defied all odds to once again prevail over their opposition, while Monster Eclipse pretty much did Monster Eclipse things to come out victorious over Mahalicia.

Team captain Alicia Fox may have been confident during the pre-show interview that they would score an upset and finally win this season, but Jinder Mahal's apprehension and her own hesitation when she got tagged in belied their squad's true state of mind.

Curiously, although I don't have the stats to prove this, it was Fox who had ring control the longest. It appeared to be since she managed to pin down Ember with two considerably lengthy rest holds. Alicia, who comedically referenced her hands almost the entire match, might not like the Singh brothers hanging around but they provided enough distraction for her to gain the upper hand early in the fight.

Once Moon was out of Fox's grip though, it was all Braun Strowman from then on. The closest approximation I can think of is that he is Derrick Lewis' knockout punch at UFC 229, the single colossal game changer that reversed what was previously a Alexander Volkov-dominated fixture.

If the "Foxy One" provided the comic relief and the time-stretching shenanigans from her restholds and the running-the-ropes spots until she gassed out, it was the chop-off between Mr. and Mrs. Rusev as well as Mr. SmackDown Live and Ms. Flair that ate a chunk of their match time.

Michael Cole had it right when he said the Rusevs need to "stop dancing and start winning." For once, I agreed with him that the underdogs in this particular contest should have taken this more seriously. Ravishing Rusev Day had their opponents at a disadvantage, with Charlotte barely coming out of Evolution alive and AJ Styles going through a title match against Daniel Bryan and then some earlier the evening. All they needed to do was do their part and close the deal.

So yeah, no amount of lackeys, even if they doubled in number, could hinder the most OP RAW division pair. And no Samoa Joe post-match beatdown nor bruises from a hellacious Last Woman Standing bout two nights earlier could derail the most imba SmackDown Live partnership in this tournament.

Besides, who would've thought that the men who won in this episode would receive the L when they have title matches in the coming PPV event? It may not look like it (or maybe they are telegraphing it too much, looking into all of the teams' win-loss records), but the booking of the MMC largely takes main show canon into serious consideration. Can't make your main eventers look bad in a throwaway go-home show, you know.

    Mixes and Matches

    • Wasn't it a tag when Alicia grabbed Jinder's wrist?
    • Michael Cole asked, "Where is grandpa Singh?" To which I respond, "Isn't he on Impact?" Yeah, I went there, and I apologize right now.
    • TIL: Lana can't chop; Rusev can "woo."
    • "Chop me one more time!" That's what he (Rusev) said.
    • Yes, R-Truth was trying to order pizza when we all know the match is about to end in ten minutes. I guess it would arrive just in time for egress.
    • I admire that Alexander (that's Rusev's first name, to those who forgot) took one for his wife by being in the receiving end of Charlotte's moonsault from the top turnbuckle, but it subtly exposed how weak Lana is when she tapped to the Figure Eight moments later.
    • For Lio Rush, "B'n'B" stands for bruised and battered. Well played.
