SmackDown RunDown Live (10/23/18): Don’t Miss WWE’s First All-Women PPV!

This is probably the longest week we’ve ever had. Aside from the unusually long work week, we wrestling fans also had to deal with Roman Reigns’ shocking revelation. I personally found it devastating and I’m not even a fan of the guy. What made it more devastating than Edge and Daniel Bryan’s retirements years ago was that at least these two can get around. I’m not saying Reigns won’t conquer his rematch with leukemia, but what happens if he doesn’t?

This isn’t me washing my hands of guilt. I will always stand by all the opinions I made about Roman Reigns. But holy jabroni, I never wanted the man to die. So yeah, I am hoping Reigns overcomes this hurdle like he did eleven years ago. I’m pretty sure you won’t see this, but I’m reaching out my closed fist as I write this sentence. Believe that, Roman. Now let’s go dissect this terrible mess of an episode because holy mackerel, this show blew.

So We’re Still Doing Evolution, Right?

I remember back when Evolution was first announced. Most of you complained about it being mentioned almost every minute. I didn’t care for it, really. That’s how marketing works. You shill a product every chance you get and hope it sticks with the people. So yes, I never bothered letting them use this marketing tactic on me. I would’ve employed the same. Fast forward to this week’s episode of SmackDown Live where Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy headlined the supposed go-home show for Evolution. Huh.

No disrespect to Orton and Hardy, but fuck that main event. It was okay, but was Orton really what we needed to close this go-home show? And before you say I’m being unfair, the women did get segments and videos to hype up Evolution. I understand that Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch didn’t need to have a promo since they’re going to destroy each other in the first ever Last Woman Standing match anyway. But what’s stopping Creative from putting Asuka or Naomi in this week’s main event?

And yeah, I guess the women got a spot near the main event. They brawled, you guys. That’s something we haven’t seen in a long time. If this is the amount of effort they could spare for a groundbreaking PPV, I’m not sure they’re really 100% behind this revolution. And the thing is, if Evolution somehow tanked on the buyrates, you just know they’re going to blame the women for it. “They just don’t draw enough.” Yeah, with a send-off as shitty as this, it’s definitely the performers’ fault for not drawing enough.

Is it really that hard to pretend that Evolution is the biggest event in WWE right now? I guess it is, considering its weak presence on this week’s SmackDown Live. They pretty much left Evolution on auto-pilot and focused their efforts in building up the highly controversial Saudi Arabia show. It’s just sad how money really dictates everything, you know? Who cares about a chopped up journalist allegedly at the hands of the KSA government, right? Gotta earn them Saudi riyals. So yeah, fuck the women. Get your little show over with. /sarcasm

Let’s Just Cancel Crown Jewel Already

Not that I care, but I heard Miz say that the Crown Jewel tournament will be divided into the RAW and SmackDown Live brackets. So we basically got the first round of the World Cup tournament for free, right? Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton advanced to the semi-finals, people! That was easy. What will the winner even get besides a crummy trophy? I hope it’s a world title shot or something. The best in the world (CM Punk! CM Punk!) surely deserves one.

And this is completely out of topic, but why exactly are we still treating the WWE Champion, AJ Styles, as a midcard champion? He’s already feuding with Daniel Bryan, a main event-caliber Superstar by WWE standards. Creative should be creaming their pants as they build this WrestleMania-worthy match, and yet we have this stale show of respect between the two. I used to love these types of rivalries; but man, they can be boring as heck.

SMACKDOWN RUNDOWN: This is probably the most nonsensical episode of SmackDown Live. You won’t guess that this was a go-home show for a historic PPV because they barely promoted it. Instead, they chose to hype a controversial event that most big names don’t even want to be part of. Women’s Revolution, amirite? It literally did nothing for Evolution and it didn’t do anything to convince everyone to abandon decency and watch Crown Jewel. So here’s an embarrassing D grade, but I guess they’re too busy counting the Saudi riyal money to care.

Some Blue Brand Blues That Didn’t Make It

    • Before I forget, I am aware of the one-hour Road to Evolution special that aired after RAW but that’s not enough, now, is it? It’s not even the last show of the main roster programming. SmackDown Live should’ve stepped up and leaned heavily on featuring more women on the show because they will be in the spotlight come Monday (Manila time). There’s really no excuse for this other than sheer incompetence.

    • WWE: Quick, Crown Jewel is getting some unwanted controversy. Can things get any more worse? Hulk Hogan: Hold my beer.
    • It was a highly predictable match, but I have to give it to the Usos for throwing a nice tribute to their Big Uce. And hey, they actually pinned the WWE Champion. The twins should be getting something out of these huge victories.
    • I honestly couldn’t care less about this episode, so apologies if I missed a segment or two. Who the hell cares about Rusev and Aiden English anyway? And hooray for the BarShow, I guess.
