The MMC With Smark Henry: Protect This Streak

If you've been following this column up to this point, you've been noticing how much I was whining about the first round, how I really just wanted to get it out of the way. Clearly, WWE had marked six favorites out of the 12 teams they fielded for this non-canon tournament, and almost all the matches were a way to get them to the second round.

Now that we're actually in the second round and we're getting matches from the superior teams, I was expecting an uptick in the quality of the in-ring action. I'm glad to report to you that Boss Club versus Awe-Suka, the first quarterfinal match, completely delivered.

At first the match started slow, with some storyline hijinks as Awe-Suka's main concern was protecting Asuka and Miz's undefeated streak. I thought they were gonna spend too much time bickering, but soon enough this plot point factors well into the match, with Finn attempting a lot of pin attempts and Asuka freaking out at the thought of her streak being broken thanks to Miz.

The match builds up quickly after that, with the factor of the streak hanging well above their heads—I've sincerely never cared too much about an MMC match until now because of this extra stake. The near falls come quick and early, with break-ups coming from the women (always a great touch), heading to the climactic moment of the match in which both Miz and Asuka are locked in stereo Bank Statements (another nice touch).

It's at that point where I honestly thought Awe-suka would be done here, because the Boss Club isn't a terrible choice to win the whole thing, but Asuka somehow manages to reverse it, distracting Finn long enough for Miz to roll him up. It's a heart-stopping finish, and the whole match represents just how good the format could be if the wrestlers themselves were creative enough. There are still limitations, yes, but these two teams managed to show the best ways to get around them.

Now the wrinkle of Asuka's streak possibly ending in the Mixed Match Challenge will haunt Awe-Suka wherever they go and make every match moving forward better, but it also probably means they're gonna win the tournament—because why would you waste the marketable streak on this thing?

    Mixes and Matches

    • I just realized that even teams eliminated in the second round are probably eligible to be voted on the second chance bracket. I'd love for either MeowOh or Sami and Becky to get back, but Boss Club coming back in is also a tempting vote. This is gonna be tough.
    • An Elimination Chamber match, two back-to-back matches on RAW, and winning their MMC match? Forget Seth Rollins, the Miz is the true workhorse of the RAW brand.
