The Grapevine (3/2/18): Booyaka New Orleans

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

It looks like John Cena may have found his WrestleMania opponent after all:

    • Rey Mysterio was backstage at this week's SmackDown episode to finalize a deal that would see him face John Cena at WrestleMania 34. Cena was apparently the one to request a match with either Rey or Samoa Joe as soon as he found out Undertaker couldn't be available for WrestleMania; the latter couldn't make it as Joe is still out injured, and Cena felt Rey brought stirred quite a buzz with his Royal Rumble appearance. Rey's deal is supposed to be finalized by the end of the week.

It seems like this is pushing forward as Rey was pulled from a CRASH Lucha Libre show happening on WrestleMania weekend. It's likely that his bout against Jushin "Thunder" Liger at NJPW's Strong Style Evolved US show won't be affected by this. (Source: Sports Illustrated, Wrestling Inc)
We say: This is huge news, and it's a matchup we're definitely fine seeing for Cena at WrestleMania. Let's make this happen, WWE.
    • Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman were definitely scheduled to be on this week's episode of RAW, but were not present at all in Anaheim, California where the show was held. As we all know already, Lesnar was in Las Vegas on Sunday to meet with UFC president Dana White. The script had to be edited to feature Roman Reigns cutting a promo. It's unsure as to whether Lesnar no-showed RAW to pressure WWE into giving him what he wants when he renegotiates his contract, or WWE was upset with him for the Dana White photo. (Source: PWInsider)
We say: If this is at all true (and we're not sure why they would work themselves into heavily advertising Brock and then having him no-show) then it's really time to cut their losses and move the Universal Championship back into regularity on RAW. The brand sorely needs their real main event championship.
    • Ronda Rousey had been training in secret at the WWE Performance Center before her first appearance at Royal Rumble. Her trainers were WWE coaches Norman Smiley and Sara Amato, NXT stars Shayna Baszler, Wesley Blake, and Steve Cutler, as well as fellow Horsewoman Jessamyn Duke, who's also training for pro wrestling again. For now, it seems as though her training will continue leading to her very first WWE match at WrestleMania, teaming with Kurt Angle against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. (Source: WON)
We say: Well, at least she didn't come into the WWE totally cold.
    • FOX is trying to get the WWE when their contract with USA expires in 2019. The renegotiation period ends in the second quarter of 2018, but if WWE moves to FOX, they would return RAW to its two-hour format and move SmackDown to FS1. (Source: Sports Illustrated)
We say: If that's true, then 2019 can't come fast enough. Also, that means The Wrestling Gods could finally return to local cable!
