The MMC With Smark Henry: Coasting Along On Week 2

The first week of WWE's Mixed Match Challenge was promising, but ultimately underwhelming, and things didn't really look good with a less-than-money matchup for their second episode featuring the RAW team of Awesuka (that's, uh, Miz and Asuka) and the SmackDown team of Big E and Carmella.

If last week felt like two separate singles matches taking turns happening, this week's match was pretty much the guys with the ladies only having smaller spots. For some reason, probably to play up her cowardly villainess act, Carmella couldn't get in as much time in the ring with Asuka. The male-to-male and female-to-female restrictions are even more terrible when you realize you really want to see Asuka try to beat up other dudes twice her size.

Anyway, this matchup was more of a foregone conclusion than the first week just because a combo of Miz and Asuka is already pretty unstoppable on paper, and is the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing. On to the next one, I guess, but it's also kind of telling that their second-round bracket is a RAW on RAW matchup. No way the SmackDown team loses next week.

Also, it turns out that WWE uploads the Mixed Match Challenge episodes to the WWE Network by the weekend, so if you're still unable to catch the matches despite the videos I'm embedding and you have the Network, just watch out for it there.

    Mixes and Matches

    • Glad to see the commentary team has finally figured out how to utilize Beth Phoenix more, and have already done away with the confusing setup of having Renee Young and Byron Saxton host the broadcast.
    • These not-so-thought-out teams make for some very interesting variations in match structures. This week, both teams were essentially face/heel mixes, and it's strange to see the Miz working on Big E in the middle of the match and then having Asuka come in for the hot tag, only for Carmella to cut off. To be fair, they actually made it work seamlessly; I just felt like Asuka was really wasted here.
    • That said, Awesuka has a lot of chemistry, mostly because Miz is willing to make himself look a little silly to be on Asuka's level.
