Live From the 205 (1/16/18): The Same 205 Live, But In 30 Minutes

This week saw the premiere of WWE's Mixed Match Challenge, which airs on Facebook Watch right after SmackDown Live finishes. That means they're forced to tape 205 Live before SmackDown begins, and strangely, that means the extra hour that should've been the cruiserweights' is now split between them and the MMC.

Strangely, 30-minutes is a good enough format for 205 Live... but that's only because they're still focusing on the same three storylines in the exact same pattern they've been in for the past month and a half or so. Now that we know the show's going to begin with TJP/Metalik, have something to do with Jack Gallagher and Hideo Itami in the middle, and the Zo Train and Cedric Alexander on the main event, half an hour isn't so bad. We're spared from the prolonging of the formulaic agony—but the formula's still there.

So there's not much in the way of new things. TJP/Metalik is the only thing that's really advancing because it's still fairly new. Cedric and Goldust continue to defeat the Zo Train, even in a three-on-one handicap match, and what was a buzzworthy build to a potential Drew Gulak or Tony Nese face turn is now lost in the mess of a muddled story that isn't sure what to do with Enzo and his crew. (Nese, by the way, is prancing around like last week didn't happen to him.)

The half-hour 205 Live is a sorry state of what the show's become three weeks into the year. It's more economical, but only because they haven't been committed to maximizing the roster for a while now. Bringing in noticeable names like Goldust—who isn't much of anything on RAW, really—isn't going to help the show. Use your damn cruiserweights. Give them time. This is strange going into the first-ever cruiserweight live event tour.

I don't know, it's like they're trying to actively kill this show or something.

205 Live 1/16/18 Grade: To no one's surprise, TJP and Metalik are keeping this show afloat, but they're going to need to start fleshing out Angry Peenoise TJP sooner than later to keep it going. B-

    Short stops

    • I can't wait for what should be TJP/Kalisto next week. Or TJP/Dorado. Just don't give us the same match three weeks in a row, please.
    • I'm sad Metalik didn't wear the Black Panther gear.
    • Why don't we ever get Itami segments? NXT did him so much better.
    • I'm happy that the entire Zo Train (sans injured Noam Dar) is back, but way to make them look like chumps in a three-on-one handicap match. Goldust taking the L would've made them look so good.
    • Why aren't they trying to build either Kalisto or Mustafa Ali—you know, other cruiserweights—in the "Cedric's friend" role?
