31 Days of Wrestling (12/4/17): Billy Suede vs. Jake De Leon

Welcome to the 31 Days of Wrestling, ladies and gentlemen. Once again, we're at that point where we take a look back at the past 11 months of pro wrestling (and as much as possible, the last month as well) and cherry-pick one match for each day of December from a list of bouts that defined the year in our beloved sport. Most matches will be good, while some may not be; what matters is that they helped build the perception and reputation of the kind of wrestling 2017 produced for us.

Today, we look back at how blessed we were with how homegrown talent fares with the international scene—a very beautiful specimen of the international scene, to be precise.

With Day Four of this year's 31 Days of Wrestling coming from PWR, it should only be fitting that we give this match the credit that it's rightfully due. Let it be known that with how 2016 ended, 2017 took things on a whole new level, and then some.

    Enter Billy Suede. Beaaaaauuuutiful!

"The Beautiful One" Billy Suede was hard pressed to find quality opposition here in the Philippines. His first match ended prematurely, as Blackzilla suffered an injury and was quickly put away. His next bout was no less uninspiring. McKata was simply nowhere near his level. With the frustration building up and eventually pouring out, one man came out that was sure to give him what he so desperately needed.

Jake De Leon, fresh from giving his blessing to Chris Panzer on his hunt for the PWR title, was hungry for a match at Wrevolution X 2017. What better way to get himself back on track for the title than to take down a wrestler of Billy Suede's caliber? Of course, the match had to happen.

Let me tell you this, ka-Smarkada. This match was so goddamn fun to watch. To see it live, unfolding the way it did right before my very eyes. would have had to have been one of the year's highlights for me in terms of being a fan of pro wrestling.

The way these two danced across the ring, dishing out move after move, counter upon counter was just so much fun. It was a mix of everything, from numerous high-flying spots to going low and technical for submissions. Speaking of submissions, this match was also the debut of Jake De Leon's hip toss to armbar, as seen below:

It was impossible to keep oneself from marking out during the course of this battle. It was just that damn good. The way everything just blended and led to the finish was one, ehem, beautiful ride. The Inasal Lock counter off of a handspring enzuigiri attempt was a thing of beauty, and such a fitting way to cap off an amazing bout.

Of course, all good things must come to an end. It was an excellent story to start off the new chapter in both wrestlers' characters. This match was the perfect showcase of how local, homegrown talent could be developed to stand with their international brethren. Truly, hats off to both men. You've given us one helluva match.
