The Grapevine (10/27/17): The Invisible Referee

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Here's how WWE is planning to get through Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal:

    • Vince McMahon is looking for a special referee in the Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at Survivor Series, and John Cena is the top candidate. If Cena were to accept the role, it would most likely lead to a Cena vs. Mahal match for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 34, something Mahal has been pushing for. Other choices for the special referee may be The Rock or Steve Austin, but the concern is whether they would be interested in doing the match, and if the Rock would even be available to do it. (Source: WON, F4WOnline)
We say: That's certainly a good way to get around the corner they backed themselves into with this match. Cena (and AJ Styles as well) may be Jinder's last hope for a feud that gets him to really step up more than he has and legitimize him, so we're okay with this. We wouldn't really be that interested if it were Rock or Austin, but it would definitely be a hook for the more casual or tired part of the fanbase.
    • There remain conflicting reports on Nia Jax's absence from the WWE. Sports Illustrated is still claiming that Nia walked away from the company at the encouragement of the Rock, who told her to do so if she was unhappy. Plans of her losing clean to Sasha Banks at TLC may have been the cause. However, Dave Meltzer is merely claiming that she was able to get a few weeks off before their European tour as she is not currently figured in prominent storylines in the RAW women's division, and that she was not upset about her status. Nia is currently booked for the European tour starting November 1, but no word on whether she'll return to RAW next week. (Source: WON, Sports Illustrated)
We say: What a mess, but we'll give Nia the benefit of the doubt. It's also entirely possible that there is some truth to the SI reports, but if she was able to get some much-needed time off, then that's good for her.
