The Grapevine (7/21/17): The Last Paige

Good afternoon, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Here's the latest we know about Paige (and Alberto El Patron):

    • Paige is facing battery charges—and possible suspension, as well as outright termination from the WWE—from the July 9 domestic violence incident with Alberto El Patron in Orlando. Paige originally claimed that they were in an altercation and they got the police involved, but then switched to claim that she was the one being held for battery charges against El Patron by the police. The arrest itself is enough grounds for suspension, while a conviction would mean instant termination, according to WWE's corporate policy on talent conduct.

Meanwhile Alberto, who has since been preemptively suspended as long as he is under investigation, has not been stripped of the GFW Heavyweight Championship yet or edited out of any Impact Wrestling broadcasts. However, his conduct and controversies as of late are forcing the company to look for a new Latino star, which is why they're trying to go after Rey Mysterio once his Lucha Underground contract is up, as previously reported. We say: What a mess. Just... what a huge mess. Paige seems to be the one looking worse here, so we wouldn't be surprised at all if she doesn't even last the end of the month with WWE. Alberto hasn't done anything absolutely terrible in this case, but he's proving to be more and more of a liability to GFW as long as he remains bitter about many things in his life, including his old employer. These two need some intervention, and fast.

    • Speaking of GFW, Magnus is already done with the company. He turned down the company's latest contract offer and wrestled on their last tapings on a "handshake deal" only to preserve the lineage of the GFW Global Championship, which he lost to Alberto El Patron, and was unified by Alberto with the Impact Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship. (Source: WON)

We say: Probably the right call for Magnus to get out of there. We wonder if we'll ever see him down at NXT.

    • Jason Jordan found out about the Kurt Angle storyline just last week. Although it seems that it was always the plan, he wasn't told about it until recently. The whole story is also a rib on Kurt Angle's dating history with African-American women. The angle does explain why American Alpha had not been doing anything as a team on SmackDown Live lately, with Chad Gable taking on singles matches with the likes of AJ Styles and Kevin Owens. Jordan on RAW opens up the possibility of either Angle teaming with him, or feuding with him sometime down the line. (Source: WON)

We say: That's great and all, but we hope that they're not imputing anything malicious toward Angle's dating preferences. Jordan's still perfect for this role, though.

    • Former ROH wrestler Donovan Dijak might be headed to NXT soon. The New Age Insiders claim that Dijak has stopped taking independent bookings, and hinting that he was bound for Orlando with the hashtag #NeXTBigThing. If true, Dijak would be the latest ex-ROH signee, following Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly, who have debuted for the brand this month. (Source: New Age Insiders)

We say: After Fish and Kyle, Dijak seems to be a bit of an anticlimactic signing, but maybe he can work it out and get better in the WWE system.
