The Grapevine (7/18/17): Who's That Jumping Up The Sky?

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

We have some news on a lucha legend:

    • Both WWE and GFW are trying to get Rey Mysterio. Rey is signed with Lucha Underground until the third season finishes airing in September. He has a 90-day no-compete after that. Lucha Underground would also try to retain him for a fourth season, although they haven't announced a new season yet. WWE wants him back to be their big Latino star again, while GFW wants him for the same reasons as they try to veer away from Alberto El Patron and his problems. WWE would have an advantage as Rey's son Dominick, who is training to be a wrestler himself, could get training at the Performance Center. (Source: Sports Illustrated)

We say: Rey is great and all, but if WWE wants to create a new Latino star, it's on them to not fail the Latinos they have. They have Kalisto and Andrade "Cien" Almas, and they've almost given up on both guys instead of trying to do them favors and help them be the stars they need. GFW needs Rey more because their Alberto problem is real. That said, Rey is 42 years old and either company isn't going to get as much mileage from him as they think they will—LU's taping format did favors for his aging body. It'll be interesting to see where Rey goes from here, but we think he'll ultimately end up back in WWE.

    • Taya has apparently quit AAA after a TV taping in which Sexy Star won the vacant Reina de las Reinas championship. Taya was stripped of the title for apparently using an illegal choke in a no-DQ match, but the real story is that they stole the belt from her under the pretense of taking photos with it and stripped her of it behind her back. AAA is claiming that Taya skipped the taping where Sexy Star won because she wouldn't defend the title, when the truth is she wasn't booked on that show. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)

We say: What a shame, and what a mess. Looks like we won't see Taya with AAA, and possibly Lucha Underground (if there is still a next season). We wouldn't be surprised if Johnny Mundo follows suit as well.
