#MustWatchMonday: Ricochet vs. Will Ospreay (OTT: A Dream Before Christmas)

On May 3, 2017, at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku, the line up for the 2017 Best of the Super Juniors Tournament was announced.

For the A block, we have the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi, his rival from CMLL, Dragon Lee, SZKG members Taka Michinoku and Taichi, the junior legend Jushin Thunder Liger, the debuting Marty Scurll, Ricochet, and Will Ospreay.

For the B block, the participants are BUSHI, Ryusuke Taguchi, KUSHIDA, Volador Jr. from CMLL, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado from SZKG, ACH, and Tiger Mask IV (Not Tiger Mask W, who totally isn't Kota Ibushi).

It doesn't take a brilliant wrestling mind to see that the A block is clearly way more stacked than the B block, and is likely to be the source of many of the memorable matches for this year's tournament. We have Hiromu Takahashi revisiting his rivalry with Dragon Lee, Marty Scurll making his NJPW debut and going up against his UK rival Will Ospreay, Jushin Thunder Liger making his last stand in his last BOSJ, and of course all the enticing matchups we're going to get in this round robin style tournament. Other than Taichi's matches (which are bad and usually full of shenanigans involving a hammer), I can't imagine anything bad coming out of this A block.

One of the most anticipated matches in this tournament is the NJPW rematch between Ricochet and Will Ospreay. If you recall, these two had a match in last year's BOSJ that generated buzz worldwide. I highly encourage you to subscribe to NJPW World here to watch the full match if you haven't already, but for a taste of how special that match was, here's a short highlight video.

Amazing, right? The amount of buzz this match generated for NJPW rivals that of Omega and Okada's match from WK11, if not more. NJPW has since steered away from having this match again until they could capitalize on it completely, and this year's BOSJ seems to be as good a time as any.

Despite not having the match in NJPW, these two have faced off again in other promotions, a recent example being UK promotion Over the Top Wrestling (OTT). At their A Dream Before Christmas event in December 2016, Will Ospreay and Ricochet faced off in the main event, and boy, they didn't disappoint.

They start by trolling the crowd, pretending they would work the match slowly and methodically. This doesn't last very long though, and soon all the flips begin. The match ebbs and flows with regard to pace, but when I say that, I mean it goes from fast to faster, then back to fast again. They keep this up for 27 minutes, and those were a great 27 minutes. Ricochet wins in the end with the Vertigo (a reverse DDT into a Tombstone). He is now 4-3 against Ospreay in singles matchups since their first match in 2013 in a rivalry for aerial supremacy that has been fought in six different promotions. It's well worth your time to watch, especially if you're excited for them to face up again in the BOSJ.

Did you enjoy the match? What matchups are you excited for in this year's Best of the Super Juniors? Leave a comment!
